MATERIALS:

8 oz. scarlet knitting worsted
2 oz. light gray knitting worsted
1 pair No. 3 needles
1 pair No. 5 needles
Knitting Chart

GAUGE:

5 1/2 stitches = 1 inch
7 rows = 1 inch

BACK:

With No. 3 needles and scarlet yarn, cast on 72 stitches. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 15 rows. Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette stitch for 50 rows or desired length to underarm ending with a purl row. Bind off 4 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows and then decrease 1 stitch each end of needle on next 4 knit rows (56 stitches left). Attach gray yarn and follow chart for back, starting to read at lower righthand corner on a knit row. Use gray yarn for background and scarlet for design. After figures are completed, break scarlet yarn and work 8 rows even in gray. Then bind off 7 stitches at beginning of next 4 rows. (See chart.) Put remaining 28 stitches on a holder and leave.

FRONT:

Work same as back through row 4 on chart for front. At this point divide stitches, putting first 28 on stitch holder and work on remaining 28 for right front, reading chart for right side from right to left. On 3rd row after you have completed the pattern, knit 12 stitches, then put these on a holder and leave. Knit to end of row. Purl back. Decrease 1 stitch at neck edge on next 2 knit rows. Work 2 more rows in gray, then bind off 7 stitches at beginning of next purl row. (See chart.) Knit back. Bind off remaining 7 stitches on following row.

Work other front to correspond, starting to read chart for left front at center neck opening on a purl row, reading from left to right, and shaping neck to correspond.

SLEEVES:

With No. 3 needles and scarlet yarn, cast on 36 stitches. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 15 rows. Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette stitch, increasing one stitch each side every 6th row until there are 56 stitches on needle. Work even until sleeve measures 10 inches above ribbing or desired length. Bind off 4 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows and 1 stitch at beginning of each row thereafter until there are 24 stitches. Then bind off 2 stitches at beginning of next 4 rows. Bind off remaining 16 stitches.

NECK:

Sew shoulder seams. With No. 3 needles and holding right side of work toward you, attach gray yarn and pick up and knit 62 stitches around neck, starting at beginning of right front. Note: This will be the 12 stitches from holders for each half front, 5 stitches along each shoulder and the 28 stitches from holder at center back. Then work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 20 rows. Bind off loosely.

TO FINISH:

Sew in sleeves and side seams. Single crochet around neck opening, leaving 3 loops for buttonholes OR make a cord of twisted yarn or chain stitch and lace through neck, finishing cord with tassels. (See illustration.)
