GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

Knit O Graf Patterns are life size. Reductions are made only when it is necessary to show a different back or a right and left sleeve in which case one of the sleeves and either the back or the front is shown life size.

Each square in the graph represents a stitch. Every row is shown, both purled and knit rows. Follow graph from right to left on knit rows, from left to right on purled rows. Changes in color of yarn is shown on graph with different types of shading. Ribbing is not shown in most cases but is explained in the printed instructions.

Smoother figures are made using bobbins for each color the same way that argyle patterns are made. Use large bobbins (holding at least 20 yards) for the area on each side of figure, smaller bobbins may be used for figure. Small detail such as eyes, nose, or single lines may be knit while making garment or embroidered later in duplicate stitch after it is finished.

LAY WORK ON GRAPH OCCASIONALLY TO CHECK FOR SIZE

Gauge – Since no two people knit exactly alike it is necessary to test your kitting and yarn by making a sample before starting garment. There may be a difference of as much as four sizes in the finished work with the wrong yarn and needles. Method for testing gauge is given at beginning of printed instructions for each pattern.

OUTLINE THE SIZE DESIRED WITH A RED PENCIL FOR EASE IN FOLLOWING

Increases and decreases – When graph shows one extra square, increase one stitch. Knit (or purl if on a purled row) first in front, then in back of stitch on left needle before slipping it off left needle. Increases of more than one stitch must be cast on at end of row as shown on graph.

When graph shows a decrease of one square, knit or purl two sts together. Decreases of more than one stitch must be bound off at the beginning of row.

Blocking – Since most knitting becomes soiled before it is finished we suggest garment be sewn together and then washed. Use tepid water and a detergent for washing. Squeeze suds through garment, rinse in tepid water, squeeze out excess water and lay on flat surface, smooth out wrinkles and pat to shape with flat of hand. All knit fabrics stretch when wet but will shrink back to shape when dry.

ALL OF THE CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS SHOWN IN THIS PATTERN ARE WORKED THE SAME. SINCE THERE IS NO FIT INVOLVED WE REDUCED THE SIZE OF THE GRAPHS TO GIVE YOU MORE STYLES.

Gauge – With No. 3 needles cast on 21 stitches, knit 1 row, purl 1 row, for 18 rows. Bind off. Press with a damp cloth, measure. Piece should measure exactly 3 inches by 2 inches. If it is smaller, try again with a larger needle. If it is larger, try again with a smaller needle.

Design – Knit to dark squares, tie figure yarn to background yarn, slip knot as close to needle as possible. Tie yarn in this manner whenever graph indicates use of a new color. With figure yarn work across figure, tie another bobbin of background yarn work across row, turn work to figure, drop background yarn across figure yarn picking up figure yarn from under background yarn. Cross yarn in this manner every time color is changed to avoid making a hole. Work across figure, work across background.

Leg – With No. 3 needles and background yarn cast on 82 sts, knit every row until there are 6 garter stitch ridges then work in stockinette, knit 1 row, purl 1 row. Knit the first and last stitch of every purled row to make a smooth garter stitch edge which looks well and is easy to sew into a neat seam. Follow graph for design.

Smoother figures are made using bobbins for each color the same way that argyle patterns are made. Use large bobbins (holding at least 20 yards) for the area on each side of figure, smaller bobbins may be used for figure. Small detail such as eyes, nose, or single lines may be knit while making garment or embroidered in duplicate stitch after it is finished.

Knit the first and last two sts together on every decrease row to double line on graph (heel marker). Right side facing, knit 2 sts tog, knit across 15 sts (16 sts on right needle) slip these 16 sts back onto left needle. Using a piece of contrasting color yarn knit across 16 sts, drop contrasting color, continue across row with background yarn, knit last 2 sts tog. Then, purl across 16 sts, slip back on left needle, using contrasting color purl across 16 sts, drop contrasting yarn, continue across row with background yarn. Work one more decrease as shown on graph working pattern as shown to toe ending on wrong side.

Row 7 – knit 1, purl to 3 sts, before marker, purl 2 tog, purl 1, slip marker, purl 1, purl 2 tog, purl to 3 sts before 2nd marker, purl 2 tog, purl 1, slip marker, purl 1, purl 2 tog, purl to last st, knit last stitch. Repeat Row 7 for every purled row until there are 16 sts left on needle. Bind off.

Fasten white yarn, nit 1, purl 16, place marker on needle, purl 16, knit 1. Row 2 – knit to 3 sts before marker, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped st over knit st, knit 1, slip marker, knit 1, knit 2 tog, knit across. Repeat these two rows until there are 24 sts left, then on purled rows, knit 1, purl to 3 sts before marker, purl 2 tog, purl 1, slip marker, purl 1, purl 2 tog, purl across continue decreasing until 2 sts remain.
