REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 4-ounces of 3-ply Baby Yarn.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #3 single pointed.
CROCHET HOOK: 1-steel #2.
TRIMMING SILK: 1-ball.
GAUGE: 8-sts to an inch. 12-rows to an inch.
YOKE PATTERN:
1st row: Knit across row. 2nd row: Purl across row.
3rd row: Knit across row. 4th row: Purl across row.
5th row: Knit across row. 6th row: Knit across row.
FEATHER AND FAN PATTERN: Row 1: Knit 2 sts together, 4 times; * yarn over, knit 1, 8 times; knit 2 sts together, 8 times; repeat from * across row, ending with knit 2 sts together 4 times. Row 2: Purl across all sts. Row 3: Knit across row. Row 4: Purl across row. Repeat these 4 rows for the pattern.
SWEATER: Using the #3 needles, cast on 82 sts for the neck edge. 1st row: Knit across row. 2nd row: Purl across row. Beading row: Knit 1, * yarn over, knit 2 sts together; repeat from * across row, ending with k 2 tog, k 1. Next row: Knit across row. Yoke: Knit 16 sts (right front); yarn over, knit 1 (first seam st), yarn over; knit 10 sts (right sleeve); yarn over, k 1 (2nd seam st), yarn over; knit 26 sts (back); yarn over, k 1 (3rd seam st), yarn over; knit 10 sts (left sleeve); yarn over, k 1 (4th seam st); yarn over, knit 16 sts (left front). Next row: Purl across row (including the yarn overs in the previous row). Next row: Knit 17 sts; yarn over, k 1 (seam st), yarn over; knit 12 sts; yarn over, k 1, yarn over; knit 28 sts; yarn over, k 1, yarn over; knit 12 sts; yarn over, k 1, yarn over; knit 17 sts. Continuing in the yoke pattern, make a yarn over before and after each seam stitch (8 increases in a row) on every other row, until you have made 18 yarn over rows (226 sts); ending with the 6th row of yoke pattern.
NOTE: The yarn over row is always worked from the right side of the garment.
SEPARATION: Knit 34 sts of front and place onto a st holder; knit 48 sts (sleeve) and leave on the needle; place the next 62 sts (back) onto another st holder; next 48 sts (sleeve) onto another st holder; and the remaining 34 sts (front) onto another st holder. Sleeve: Working the sleeve first, cast on 4 sts at end of row. Purl back, increasing 16 sts along the row (about every 3rd st); cast on 4 sts at end of row (72 sts). Starting with Row 1 of feather and fan pattern work until the sleeve measures 5 inches from the underarm. Bind off all sts from the right side of work loosely. Sew up sleeve. 2nd sleeve: Knit the sts off st holder onto the needle and work to correspond to the first sleeve.
BODY PART: Place the sts of the first front onto a free needle; tie yarn in at the underarm edge; pick up and knit 8 sts on the 8 sts that were cast on for the sleeve underarm; knit the sts of the back from the st holder onto the same needle; pick up and knit 8 sts on the underarm of the sleeve; knit the sts of the last front onto this needle. Next row: Purl 5 sts, * increase 1 st in the next st, p 2, repeat from * across row; ending with purl 5 sts, (192 sts). Now work in the feather and fan pattern until the piece measures 6 inches from the underarm, or the desired length. Bind off from the right side of work, loosely.
FINISHING: Using the #2 steel hook and yarn, make a row of s c all around the edge of the sweater, keeping the work flat. Do the same around the sleeve edge. Now using the No. 2 steel hook and the silk, make 2 rows of s c all around the edge. Run ribbon through at neck edge.
BONNET: Using the #3 needle, cast on 96 sts and work in the Feather and Fan pattern until the piece measures 5 inches in all, ending with row 2. Next row: * Knit 6 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row, ending with k 2 tog. Knit across next row. 1st dec: * Knit 10 sts, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row, ending with k 2 tog. Purl next row. 2nd dec: * Knit 9 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row, ending with k 2 tog. Purl next row. 3rd dec: * Knit 8 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit next row.4th dec: * Knit 7 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 5th dec: * Knit 6 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 6th dec: * Knit 5 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit next row. 7th dec: * Knit 4 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 8th dec: * Knit 3 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 9th dec: * Knit 2 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit next row. 10th dec: * Knit 1 st, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Purl next row. Last dec: Knit 2 sts together across row. Break yarn, leaving 9-inches. Thread a darning needle and sew the center back together up to where the pattern begins, sew ½-inch more. Neck band: With the right side of the work facing you, pick up and knit 79 sts along the neck edge. Knit 3 rows. Beading row: K 1, * yarn over, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row, ending with k 2 tog, k 1. Knit 4 rows. Bind off all sts. Finishing: Across the front of bonnet finish off with 1 row of s c with yarn, then 2 rows with the silk. Trim with ribbon.
BOOTIES: Using the #3 needles, cast on 48 sts and work in the Feather and Fan pattern until the piece measures 3 inches, ending with row 3. Next row: Purl 16 sts, * p 2 sts tog, p 2, repeat from * 3 times more; purl 16 sts. Beading row: Knit 1, * yarn over, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row, ending with yarn over, k 2 tog, k 1. Purl across next row (44 sts). Instep: Knit 16 sts, place these onto a st holder; knit 12 sts and leave on the needle; place the remaining 16 sts onto a 2nd st holder. On the 12 sts work in the yoke pattern for 24 rows. Break yarn. Place the sts from first st holder onto a free needle, tie yarn in. Pick up and knit with the same needle 12 sts along side of instep; knit across the 12 sts; pick up and knit 12 sts along 2nd side of instep; knit the 16 sts off 2nd st holder. Sole part: 1st row: Purl across all sts. 2nd row: Knit across row. 3rd row: Purl across row. 4th row: Knit across row. 5th row: Knit across row. 6th row-dec: Knit 2 tog, k 24, k 2 tog, k 12, k 2 tog, k 24, k 2 tog. 7th row: Purl across row. 8th row: Knit across row. 9th row: Purl across row. 10th row-dec: Knit 2 tog, k 22, k 2 tog, k 12, k 2 tog, k 22, k 2 tog. 11th row: Knit across row. 12th row: Knit across row. Bind off all sts. Sew up sole and back of bootie. Finish top edge of bootees with one row of s c in yarn, 2 rows with the silk. Run ribbon through at the beading row. Make the other bootie the same way.
