With size 2 needles and the main color, cast on 80 stitches. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 1¾ inches. Change to size 3 needles and knit across the next row, increasing to 83 stitches. Purl back, then work in stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) until piece measures 9½ inches, ending with a purl row. Follow the diagram for the underarm decreases which start on the next row. Do not knit in design on back. Decreases at the underarm are made by binding off the number of stitches shown. Always slip the first stitch when binding off. For the shoulders, start on the indicated row and bind off at the beginning of 6 consecutive rows the number of stitches shown, placing the remaining 27 stitches on a stitch holder for the neckband.
With size 2 needles and the main color, cast on 45 stitches. Work the first 38 stitches in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2; then knit 1, purl 1, for the remaining 7 stitches. Continue working these 7 stitches in the seed stitch (knit 1, purl 1, on both the right and wrong sides) for the front band. When the ribbing measures I¾ inches and with the seed stitch at the left hand side, change to size 3 needles and work in stockinette stitch to correspond with the back. Follow the half of the diagram marked "left front," continuing the seed stitch for the front band. For the neck opening, work the first 23 stitches and place the remaining 14 stitches on a stitch holder for the neckband. Cast on 45 stitches on size 2 needles. Seed stitch the first 7 stitches and knit 2, purl 2, for the remaining 38 stitches. When the ribbing measures 1¾ inches and with the seed stitch at the right hand side, start the stockinette stitch and follow the half of diagram marked "right front" continuing the seed stitch for the front band. The first buttonhole is made in the seed stitch half way up the ribbing, and the other six, every 2 inches. To make a buttonhole, bind off the 4th and 5th stitches in from the edge. On the next row, cast on 2 stitches to replace these. For the neck opening, work the first 14 stitches and place them on a stitch holder for the neckband. Then work the remaining 23 stitches for the shoulder, binding off for the shoulder to correspond with left front. For the neck decreases, knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit.
After the shoulder seams have been sewn together, with right side facing and size 3 needles, pick up 64 stitches along the armhole edge. Work in stockinette stitch. When sleeve measures 11½ inches, change to size 2 needles and knit 2, purl 2, for 2 inches. Bind off loosely in the knit 2, purl 2 pattern.
