MATERIALSClark's O.N.T. Lustersheen, 39 skeins of White or Ecru, or 52 skeins of any color for double size spread; 32 skeins of White or Ecru, or 42 skeins of any color for a single size spread.

Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size).

GAUGE: Each strip measures about 4½ inches wide.

STRIPStarting at one end, cast on 41 sts. 1st row: K 5,* O, k 3, k 2 tog. twice, O, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with O, k 3, k 2 tog. twice, O, k 5. 2nd row: K 4, p 33, k 4. 3rd to 8th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows alternately. 9th row: K 5, * O, (sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.) twice, k 3, O, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with O, (sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.) twice, k 3, O, k 5. 10th row: Same as 2nd row. 11th to 16th rows incl: Repeat 9th and 10th rows alternately. These 16 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 16 rows until piece measures 98 inches (being careful to complete the last pattern). Bind off.

   For a double size spread, 91 x 108 inches including fringe, make 18 strips, and sew together on wrong side with neat over-and-over stitches. For a single size spread, 73 x 108 inches including fringe, make 14 strips, and sew together in same manner.

FRINGECut 8 strands, each 14 inches long. Double these strands, forming a loop. With a crochet hook, pull loop through a row of garter stitch, and draw loose ends of fringe through this loop. Pull tight. Make fringe, ½ inch apart, around all edges. Then knot together 8 strands of 2 adjacent knots ½ inch down from foundation row. Continue in this manner around. Then repeat this rnd once more. Trim fringe evenly.
