Spool Cotton #138, Woolies for Infants

SIZE 1-2 YEARS

MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 2 balls (1 oz. balls) of White and 1 ball of Pink.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
A 16-inch circular knitting pin No. 3 (3 mm. size).
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.
4 buttons.

Gauge: 8 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at neck, with No. 3 straight needles and White cast on 80 sts. 1st row: Inc. in 1st st, k 1, inc. in next st (seam sts), k 16 (sleeve); inc. in next st, k 1, inc. in next st (seam sts); k 36 (Back); inc. in next st, k 1, inc. in next st (seam sts); k 16 (sleeve); inc. in next st, k 1, inc. in next st (seam sts)—8 sts increased. 2nd row: P across. 3rd row: K 1 (Left Front); inc. in next st, k 1, inc. in next st (seam); k 18 (sleeve); inc. in next st, k 1, inc. in next st (seam); k 38 (Back); inc. in next st, k 1, inc. in next st (seam); k 18 (sleeve); inc. in next st, k 1, inc. in next st (seam); k 1 (Right Front)—8 more sts increased. 4th row: P across. Continue increasing 8 sts each k row until there are 256 sts on needle, ending with a p row. Next row: K 24, place next 62 sts on stitch holder (sleeve); k 84 (Back); place next 62 sts on stitch holder; k 24. Work over these 132 sts for 8 rows. Slip all these sts onto a piece of yarn.

SLEEVES … Transfer 62 sts onto No. 3 Needles; work straight for 2¼ inches. Break off. Attach Pink, change to No. 1 needles and work ¾ inch in ribbing of k 2, p 2. Bind off.

CENTER FRONT BANDS … Holding right side of work toward you, with No. 1 needles and Pink pick up 36 sts along Right Front edge and k 1 row Pink, k 4 rows White; 6 rows Pink; 6 White; 3 Pink. Bind off. Work Left Front in same way.

Divide sts on yarn into 3 sections (Left Front, Back and Right Front), having 84 sts for Back and 24 sts for each Front.

BACK WAISTBAND … Transfer sts of Back onto No. 1 needles and work in ribbing as follows: 3 rows Pink, 2 rows White, 4 rows Pink; 2 White, 3 Pink. Break off.

FRONT WAISTBAND … Holding right side toward you, with Pink k across 24 sts of Right Front, pick up 18 sts across bottom of center front band, pick up 18 sts across bottom of Left Front band and k across 24 sts of Left Front (84 sts). Work to correspond with Back waistband.

Break off. Attach White, transfer the sts of Back and Front onto circular needle (168 sts), and work in rnds; k each rnd for 1 inch. On next rnd inc. 2 sts directly below underarm at both sides (4 sts increased). Continue increasing 4 sts as before every inch, having increases fall over previous ones, until there are 188 sts in the rnd. Work straight for 1 more inch. Divide sts into 2 sections of 94 sts (Front and Back).

BACK … Work over 94 sts, binding off 4 sts at beginning of each row until 54 sts remain. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 36 sts remain. Bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 24 sts remain. Work 10 rows straight. Bind off.

FRONT … Work to correspond with Back.

LEG BANDS … With Pink and No. 1 needles, pick up 90 sts all around leg and work ½ inch in ribbing. Bind off.

NECK BAND … Holding right side toward you, with Pink and No. 1 needles pick up 108 sts around neck edge, including center front bands; work ¾ inch in ribbing. Bind off. Sew up center front band, leaving top free for 2 inches. Make four ch-7 loops close together at top of Right Front opening; sew buttons to correspond. Work 4 rows White s c across crotch at Back and Front (include ribbing). Fasten crotch with 4 snap fasteners. Sew up waistband at sides.

Sizes 1 and 2

MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY POMPADOUR, 3 balls (1 oz. Balls) of main color for size 1; 4 balls of main color for size 2. Also 1 ball of contrasting color for each size.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
Milward's 16-inch Circular Knitting Pin No. 5 (4 mm. size).

GAUGE: 6 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

With No. 5 needle, starting at neck, cast on with main color	58 sts	60 sts
Do not join, but work in rows as follows: 1st row: P across. 2nd row: K 1, inc. 1 st in next st (Left Front), insert a marker on the needle, inc. 1 st in next st, k 13 sts, inc. 1 st in next st (left sleeve), insert a marker on the needle. For Back, inc. 1 st in next st, knit	22 sts	24 sts
Inc. 1 st in next st, insert a marker, inc. 1 st in next st, k 13, inc. 1 st in next st (right sleeve). Insert marker, inc. in next st, k 1 (Right Front)—8 sts increased. 3rd and all odd rows: P across. 4th and all even rows: K across, increasing in the st before and in the st after each of the 4 markers (8 increases on every k row) until there are on needle	202 sts	228 sts
Purl 1 row after the last increase-row. Next row: K across to 2nd marker, turn and purl back to 1st marker (for sleeve). Work in stockinette stitch over these	51 sts	57 sts
For	2¼"	2¾"
Change to contrasting color and No. 3 needles. Dec.	3 sts	1 sts
Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for ¾ inch. Bind off loosely in ribbing	Both sizes
Slip the sts of Back to other end of needle, attach yarn and work sts of other sleeve to correspond. Slip the sts of Back to other end of needle again, attach yarn at end of Left Front and k across sts of Back and Right Front.	100 sts	114 sts
Work in stockinette stitch over these sts until piece measures, from back of neck	5½"	6¼"
Slip sts on needle to a strand of yarn. Using No. 3 needles and contrasting color, with right side facing, pick up along Right Front edge	28 sts	34 sts
Work in garter stitch as follows: k 1 row with contrasting color, k 4 rows main color, 6 rows contrasting, 6 rows main, 3 rows contrasting. On size 2 only, work 2 more rows main color. Bind off. Work other front to correspond	Both sizes
Divide sts on yarn into 3 sections as follows: For each Front have	20 sts	23 sts
For Back have the remaining	60 sts	68 sts
BACK WAISTBAND … Transfer the sts of Back to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, as follows: 2 rows contrasting color, 2 rows main, 4 rows contrasting, 2 main, 2 contrasting. Break yarn.	Both sizes
FRONT WAISTBAND … With right side facing, using contrasting color and No. 3 needles, k across the sts of Right Front, pick up across bottom of Right Front band	10 sts	11 sts
Pick up across bottom of Left Front band	10 sts	11 sts
Knit across sts of Left Front. In all	60 sts	68 sts
Work to correspond with Back waistband.	Both sizes
Break yarn, attach main color and with circular needle k across sts of Back and Front. In all	120 sts	136 sts
Join and work in rnds (k each rnd) for 1 inch. Then inc. 2 sts directly below both openings in waistband (4 sts increased). Repeat increases every 6th row until there are	148 sts	164 sts
Work straight until piece measures, from bottom of waistband	6½"	7½"
Divide sts evenly for Back and Front, and work back and forth as follows over	74 sts	82 sts
Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 4 rows, and 3 sts at beginning of following 4 rows. Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until there remain	22 sts	26 sts
Dec. 1 st at end of each row until there remain	18 sts	22 sts
Work straight until piece measures, from bottom of waistband	9¼"	10¼"

LEG BANDS … With right side facing, using No. 3 needles and contrasting color, pick up along leg opening	80 sts	84 sts
Work in ribbing for ½ inch. Bind off loosely in ribbing.	Both sizes
NECK BAND … With right side facing, using No. 3 needles and contrasting color, pick up around entire neck edge	84 sts	88 sts
Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for ¾ inch. Bind off in ribbing	Both sizes
Sew center front edges together from top of waistband, leaving a 2-inch opening at neck. Work three ch-3 buttonloops on Right Front, and sew on buttons to correspond. With main color work 3 rows of s c along ends of crotch. Sew snap fasteners along crotch. Sew up sides of waistband. Press through damp cloth.
