Size 6 Years

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls of a light color, 1 ball of a dark color. Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size). 2 small buttons.

Gauge: 9 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, with dark color cast on 112 sts and k 1 row, p 1 row. Drop dark color, attach light color and k 1 row, p 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row. These 6 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 6 rows, thus alternating a light stripe of 4 rows and a dark stripe of 2 rows until work measures 11½ inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 86 sts remain. Work straight until work measures 5 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape neck, k across 1st 38 sts, then bind off 10 sts and k across remaining 38 sts. Turn and work over these 38 sts, binding off 4 sts at neck edge every other row until 18 sts remain. Then to shape shoulder bind off 6 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are bound off. Attach thread to neck edge at opposite side and work to correspond.

Neck Band. With right side of work toward you, with light color pick up 54 sts across neck edge and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1 inch. Bind off tightly.

Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 112 sts and work as for back to armhole shaping. Then shape armholes as for back until 94 sts remain. Work straight until work measures 3½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row work across 1st 42 sts, bind off 10 sts (thus starting neck shaping), then continue across remaining 42 sts. Hereafter work over these 42 sts, binding off 8 sts at beginning of row at neck edge and decreasing 1 st at neck edge every row thereafter until 18 sts remain. Shape shoulder as before until all sts are bound off. Attach thread to neck edge at opposite side and work to correspond.

Neck Band. Work as for back neck band but picking up 76 sts instead of 54 sts.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, with dark color cast on 68 sts and work as for back, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until there are 90 sts on needle. Work straight until work measures 3½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 60 sts remain. Then bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 24 sts remain. Bind off.

Sew up underarm and shoulder seams, leaving open at neck bands. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Make a 1 inch hem all around bottom of shirt and sleeves. Make a small loop at each end of front neck band and sew buttons on back neck band to correspond.
