Coat

Back. The entire coat is made with thread used double. Work starts at bottom of back, continues up to the shoulders and down the front in two pieces (left and right side). Cast on 92 sts and work in garter st for 3 ridges. Then work in stockinette for 2½ inches. Then begin pattern on right side of work. 1st row: K 3, p 2, * k 5, p 2, repeat from * across ending with k 3. 2nd row: K across. Repeat these 2 rows, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 12th row until 12 sts have been decreased. Then work straight until piece measures 13 inches from beginning.

Yoke and Sleeves, are worked in garter st. K 1 row, knitting every 9th and 10th sts together (a decrease—72 sts on needle). Cast on 20 sts at end of each of next 4 rows, then cast on 10 sts at end of each of next 2 rows. Work straight for 16 ridges (about 3½ inches). Next Row: K 75, bind off 22 sts, k 75.

Front. Work 2 ridges on these 75 sts, then cast on 14 sts at neck edge and work straight for 14 ridges, ending at sleeve edge. Bind off 10 sts at beginning of next row, and k across remainder. Work back. Bind off 20 sts at beginning of next row and k across. Work back. Bind off 20 sts at beginning of next row and k across (which will bring work to neck edge). Next row: Make 1 increase in each 9th st across. Then begin pattern on right side and work in pattern making increases at underarm side to correspond with the decreases at back. Finish lower border as for Back. Bind off. Attach thread at neck edge and work other front to correspond.

Cuff. Cast on 48 sts and work in garter st for 3 ridges, then in stockinette for 2½ inches. Bind off.

Collar. Cast on 80 sts and work in garter st for 3 ridges, then in stockinette for 2½ inches, making the first and last 4 sts in garter st throughout collar. Bind off.

Center Front Bands. Down each center front edge, pick up enough sts to keep work flat and work in garter st for 3 ridges. Bind off. Sew collar and cuffs to coat. Sew side and sleeve seams. Attach single thread at neck edge of right center front band. With crochet hook, make a chain 2 inches long, sl st 1 inch down from neck edge, turn and s c closely over this ch-loop. Cover the button as follows: With single thread and crochet hook, ch 3, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: 6 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c. 3rd rnd: * 1 s c in 1st s c, 2 s c in next. Repeat from * around until 40 sts are in rnd. Next rnd: 1 s c in each s c. Continue making 1 s c in every 2nd s c, slipping in button before round gets too small, then continue with 1 s c in every 2nd s c until button is covered. Sew button to correspond with buttonhole.

Embroidery Work. In the stockinette border of coat, make 2 rows of lazy daisy flowers of about 1⅛ inches in diameter, with 8 petals to each flower.

Lower row: * Start with Yellow at right front edge, make 1 flower, 2nd flower in Dk. Orange, 3rd in Green, 4th in Lavender, 5th in Red, repeat from * once, then make 1 Yellow, 1 Dk. Orange and 1 Green. This should bring you to center back. Then begin at left front edge and work to center back carrying out same color scheme.

Upper Row: Space the flowers between the lower flowers, 1st in Lavender, 2nd in Red, 3rd Yellow, 4th Orange, 5th Green. Continue till center back; then start at other edge and carry out same scheme. In front upper corners work a half flower in Green. Work 2 similar rows of flowers on collar and 1 row on cuffs.

Beret.

With single thread and crochet hook, ch 3, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: 6 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each st. 3rd rnd: * 1 s c in 1st st, 2 s c in next, repeat from * around. 4th rnd: Increase in every 3rd st. 5th rnd: Increase in every 4th st. 6th rnd: Increase in every 5th st. Continue in this manner, increasing enough sts to keep work flat, but never making increases over former increases. When work measures 8½ inches in diameter, work 4 rnds without increases, then work 1 rnd skipping every 13th st (thus decreasing). Work 3 rnds straight, then skip every 13th st until headsize measures about 17 inches. Work 4 rnds straight. Break off. Embroider 9 flowers around center of beret one rnd of 3 flowers and a second rnd of 6 flowers. Cover other button with crochet and sew to center of beret.
