Saque & Bonnet Pattern

Size: Infants to 1 yr.

REQUIREMENTS:                      

YARN: 4-ounces of 3-ply Baby Yarn
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #3 single pointed

GAUGE: 8-sts to an inch.

BACK: Starting at the lower edge and using the #3 needles, cast on 94 sts. K 1 row, p 1 row, for 7 rows; ending with a knit row. (This forms the border). Starting again with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 6-inches in all, or as long as you wish up to the underarm. UNDERARM SHAPING: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, (once at each side). Decrease 1 st at each side of the work every knit row, twice. (84 sts). Work in stockinette stitch until the armhole measures ¾-inches from the first bind off, ending with a purl row. NEXT ROW: Right side of work. K 9 sts; p 2 sts together 5 times; k 18 sts; p 2 sts together 5 times; k 18; p 2 sts together 5 times; k 9 sts. 2nd row: P 9, k 5, p 18, k 5, p 18, k 5, p 9. 3rd row: K 8, p 7, k 16, p 7, k 16, p 7, k 8. 4th row: P 8, k 7, p 16, k 7, p 16, k 7, p 8. 5th row: K 7, p 9, k 14, p 9, k 14, p 9, k 7. 6th row: P 7, k 9, p 14, k 9, p 14, k 9, p 7. 7th row: K 4, k 2 tog, p 11, k 2 tog, k 8, k 2 tog, p 11, k 2 tog, k 8, k 2 tog, p 11, k 2 tog, k 4. 8th row: Work back as the sts are. 9th row: K 2, k 2 tog, p 13, k 2 tog, k 4, k 2 tog, p 13, k 2 tog, k 4, k 2 tog, p 13, k 2 tog, k 2. 10th row: Work back as the sts are. Following the sts as they are, work until the armhole measures 4¼-inches above the underarm. SHOULDERS: Bind off 8 sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows, (16 sts for each shoulder). Bind off the remaining sts for the back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: Using the #3 needles cast on 57 sts and work the border as on the back. 1st row: K 51 sts, p 5, k 1. 2nd row: P 1, k 5, p 51. Repeat these 2 rows up to the underarm, ending with a purl row. UNDERARM SHAPING: At the underarm edge bind off 3 sts once. Decrease 1 stitch at the underarm edge every knit row twice. Work until the armhole measures ¾-inches above the underarm bind off, ending with a purl row. NEXT ROW: Right side of work. K 9, p 2 tog, 5 times; k 26 sts, p 5, k 1. 2nd row: P 1, k 5, p 26, k 5, p 9. Now make the decreases at each side of detail panel as on back. Then work until the armhole measures 3½ inches above the underarm bind off. NECK SHAPING: At the neck edge bind off 10 sts once; then 3 sts, 3 times. Work even until the armhole measures the same as the back. SHOULDERS: From the armhole edge bind off 8 sts twice. RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to the left one. BUTTON­HOLES: At the start of the pattern at yoke make the first button­hole by binding off 3 center sts of the purl 5 at front edge every ¾-inches.

SLEEVES: Using the #3 needles cast on 44 sts and work the border of 7 rows as on the back, increase 12 sts in the last row, (56 sts). Now work in the stockinette stitch until the sleeve measures 7-inches in all. UNDERARM SHAPING: Bind off 2 sts at each side of the work, once at each side. Decrease 1 stitch at each of the work every 4th row, 7 times. Next Knit row: Knit 2 sts together across the row. Bind off. MAKE THE OTHER SLEEVE THE SAME WAY. FINISHING: Sew the shoulders to­gether. With the right side of the work facing you, pick up all sts and work in 7 rows of stockinette stitch having the purl side on the right side of the work. Bind off loosely. Sew the side seams, sleeve seams and sew sleeves into the armhole matching the underarm seams. EMBROIDERY: With the blue yarn work a chain st around the purl panels and across bottom and neck edge. Make 2 lazy daisy flowers at top and bottom of purl panels.

BONNET: Using the #3 needles starting at the front edge cast on 85 sts. Work in stockinette stitch k 1 row, p 1 row, for 1¼-inches, ending with a knit row. Run a thread through all sts, but leave on the needle. With the purl side facing you start the ruffle as follows: 1st inc: Increase 1 st in every 5th st across row, ending with k 5. 2nd row: P 5, k 1, repeat across row; ending with p 5. 3rd row: * k 4, inc. 1 st in next st, p 1, repeat from * across row, ending with k 5. 4th row: P 5, k 2, repeat across row, ending with p 5. 5th row: * k 4, inc. 1 st in next st, p 2; repeat from * across row, ending with k 5. 6th row: P 5, k 3, repeat across row, ending with p 5. 7th row: * k 4, inc. 1 st in next st, p 3, repeat from * across row, end­ing with k 5. 8th row: P 5, k 4, repeat across row, ending with p 5. 9th row: * k 4, inc. 1 st in next st, p 4, repeat from * across row, ending with k 5. 10th row: P 5, k 5, repeat across row, ending with p 5. 11th row: * k 4, inc. 1 st in next st, p 5, repeat from * across row, ending with k 5. 12 row: P 5, k 6, repeat across row, ending with p 5. Bind off the sts on the next row, knitting the k st, purling the p sts. The 85 sts that are marked with a colored thread, run the knitting needle through them, or pick up and knit them. Tie yarn in. Work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 3 inches from base of ruffle. BACK SHAPING: Bind off 29 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, (once at each side). On the remaining 27 sts work in stockinette st until the piece measures the same length as the bound off sides. Bind off 27 sts. Sew bound off length to each side of the back piece. With the right side of the work facing you, pick up and knit 27 sts across front, pick up the 27 sts of back piece; and 27 sts on 2nd front. NEXT ROW: (Decrease) Knit every 3rd and 4th sts together across row. Knit 2 rows. Beading Row: K 2, * yarn over, k 2 tog, k 2, repeat from * across row. K 2 rows. Bind off all sts. EMBROIDERY: At the base of the ruffle, make a chain st of blue. Make 3 lazy daisy flowers along front panel. Trim with ribbon.
