MATERIALS
BERNAT Boucle de Laine—13(14-15) balls
BERNAT Ribbon—7(7-8) spools
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 2 (standard)
1 24 inch circular needle No. 2 (standard)
1 steel crochet hook No. 3
1 yd 1 inch grosgrain ribbon
1 yd ½ inch elastic
1 pair shoulder pads
1 buckle
1 slide fastener

GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 inch; 12 rows = 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH FOR BANDS ON SKIRT
Round 1: Using Ribbon, * K 1 wrapping around needle twice before completing st, bring ribbon to front, sl 1 st as if to P, throw ribbon to back, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 2: Using Ribbon, ** sl first wrap st as if to P and drop 2nd wrap st off needle making 1 long st, K 1 wrapping around needle twice before completing st ** repeat from ** to end of round.
Rounds 3 and 5: K 1 wrapping yarn around needle twice, repeat between **'s of Round 2.
Rounds 4 and 6: Repeat Round 2.
Round 7: Using yarn, * K 1, bring yarn to front and sl 1 as if to P, throw yarn to back, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 8: Using yarn, * bring yarn to front and sl 1 as if to P, throw yarn to back and K 1, repeat from * to end of round.
Repeat these 8 rounds for pattern st on bands.

SKIRT

NOTE: Any changes in length of skirt are made before first dec round.

Using circular needle and yarn, cast on 560(580-600) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. K round and round until piece measures 2(2-2½) inches. FIRST DEC ROUND: * K 26(27-28) sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * to end of round—20 sts dec. Work even for 1½ inches. SECOND DEC ROUND: * K 25(26-27) sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * to end of round—20 sts dec. Work even on 520(540-560) sts for 1 inch. Now work in pattern st for 3 inches. ** Using yarn, K round and round for 1 inch. On the next round, dec 20 sts in same manner as before having 1 st less between dec and repeat this dec round every 1½ inches twice more. Work even for 1 inch. Now work in pattern st for 2½ inches **. Repeat between **'s once more. Using yarn K round and round for 1 inch. On the next round dec 20 sts in same manner as before and repeat this dec round every 1(1½-1½) inches twice more. Work even on 340(360-380) sts for 1 inch. Then work in pattern st for 2 inches. Using yarn, K round and round for 1 inch. On the next round dec 20 sts in same manner as before. Work 1 inch even. On the next round dec 20 sts in same manner as before. Work even on 300(320-340) sts for ½ inch. On the next round * K 2 sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * to end of round—225(240-255) sts. K the next 2 rounds. Bind off all sts.

BLOUSE

BACK: Using straight needles and yarn, cast on 108(116- 124) sts. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾ inch 10 times. Work even on 128(136-144) sts until piece measures 7¾(7¾-8¼) inches. SHAPE SLEEVES: Put a marker at each end of work. On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every ½ inch until sleeves measure 3½(4-4½) inches. BACK OPENING: Work across one half the sts; join another ball of yarn and work to end of row. Working on both sides at once, continue to inc 1 st at each sleeve edge every ½ inch until there are 76(80-84) sts on each side. Work even on both sides until sleeves measure 7¾(8-8¼) inches above markers. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At each arm edge bind off 10 sts 5 times and 8(11-14) sts once. Bind off remaining 18(19-20) sts of each side.

FRONT: Using straight needles and yarn, cast on 116(124-132) sts. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾ inch 10 times. Work even on 136(144-152) sts until piece measures 7¾(7¾-8¼) inches. SHAPE SLEEVES: Put a marker at each end of work. On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every ½ inch 11 times more. Work even on 160(168-176) sts until armholes meas­ure 6(6¼-6½) inches. SHAPE NECK: Work 63(66-70) sts; join another ball of yarn and bind off center 34(36-36) sts; work remaining 63(66-70) sts. Working on both sides at once, dec 1 st at each neck edge every other row 5(5-6) times. Work even on 58(61-64) sts of each side until armholes measure 7¾(8-8¼) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At each arm edge bind off 10 sts 5 times and 8(11-14) sts once.

PATTERN STITCH FOR TRIMMING BANDS
Row 1: Using Ribbon, * K 1 wrapping around needle twice before completing st, bring ribbon to front and sl 1 as if to P, throw ribbon to back, repeat from * to end of row.
Row 2: Using Ribbon, * P 1 wrapping around needle twice before completing st, throw ribbon to back, sl first wrap st as if to P and drop second wrap st off needle making 1 long st, repeat from * to end of row.
Row 3: Using Ribbon, * K 1 wrapping around needle twice, bring ribbon to front, sl wrap st as if to P and drop second wrap st to form a long st, repeat from * to end of row.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Row 5: Using yarn, * K 1, bring yarn to front and sl 1 as if to P, throw yarn to back, repeat from * to end of row.
Row 6: Using yarn, * P 1, throw yarn to back and sl 1 as if to P, bring yarn to front, repeat from * to end of row.
Rows 7 and 9: Repeat Row 1.
Rows 8 and 10: Repeat Row 2.
These 10 rows form complete pattern for bands.

ARM AND NECK BANDS: Make 2. Using yarn, cast on 200(204-208) sts. Join ribbon and work 10 rows of pattern st. Using yarn, bind off all sts.

CENTER BAND: Using yarn, cast on 144(144-148) sts. Join ribbon and work 10 rows of pattern st. Using yarn, bind off.

BELT: Using yarn, cast on 168(176-184) sts. Join ribbon and work 10 rows of pattern st. Using yarn, bind off.

FINISHING: Using yarn, work 2 rows s c on bottom and top edges of skirt. Make a beading at inside top of skirt. Sew underarm and shoulder seams. Using yarn, work 2 rows s c around sleeve, neck and back opening edges. Block skirt and blouse. Block arm and neck bands to 36(36½-37) inches. Block center band to 27(27-28) inches. Block belt to 30(31-32) inches. Appliqué bands on blouse as shown in photograph, being sure to miter at points. Sew skirt and blouse tog. Run elastic, cut to waist measurement, through beading and sew ends tog. Close back opening with slide fastener. Sew in shoulder pads. Face belt with grosgrain ribbon. Using yarn, buttonhole st over buckle and sew to end of belt.
