1 Pr. Knitting Needles No. 9 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE BELOW
GAUGE: 2 blocks = 1½ inches; 6 rows = 1 inch
Directions are given for Small size. Changes for Medium and Large sizes given in parentheses. Work 2. Starting at heel with MC cast on 55 sts (all sizes). K 3 rows, drop MC. START PATTERN: 1st ROW: Right side (always carry colors on wrong side of each row throughout). Attach CC, K 5, drop CC, * pick up MC, P 5 pulling yarn tightly across sts, drop MC, pick up CC, K 5 pulling yarn tightly across sts, repeat from * across row. 2nd ROW: Always cross CC and MC at beg of each row. With CC P 5, drop CC, * pick up MC, K 5 pulling yarn tightly, drop MC, pick up CC, P 5 pulling yarn tightly, repeat from * across row. 3rd ROW: Repeat 1st row. 4th ROW: Repeat 2nd row. 5th ROW: Repeat 1st row. 6th ROW: Reverse colors and blocks in this row. With MC P 5, drop MC, * pick up CC, P 5, drop CC, with MC P 5, drop MC, repeat from * across row. 7th ROW: * With MC, P 5, with CC, K 5, repeat from * across row ending P 5 MC. 8th ROW: * With MC, K 5, with CC, P 5, repeat from * across ending K 5 MC. NEXT 3 ROWS: Repeat 7th, 8th rows, then 7th row. NEXT ROW: Repeat 6th row reversing colors and blocks. NEXT 5 ROWS: Repeat 1st 5 rows. Continue in established pattern alternating colors and blocks until there are 6 (7, 8) blocks in length. SHAPE TOE: Work 2 sts tog in each block in every other row until 2 sts remain in each block, cut yarn leaving a length. Thread yarn into a blunt needle and draw sts tog; then sew edges tog for about 2½ or 3 inches for instep seam.
CUFF: With Red, pick up and K 1 st in every other row all around top. Work in garter st (K each row) until cuff measures 3 inches, bind off. Sew back seam drawing heel tog slightly. Sew cuff. Fold cuff over as illustrated.
POMPONS: Wind remainder of both colors over a 4 inch cardboard. Remove from cardboard, cut both ends. Divide in half for each slipper. Tie in center and attach as illustrated.
