Size 34-36

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 10 balls of color 82 Autumn Glow and 1 ball of color 48 Hunter's Green, or Clark's O.N.T. Cronita, 12 balls of Autumn Glow and 1 ball of Green. Milward's knitting pins No. 3 (3 mm. size) and 1 pair of 2½ mm. steel knitting pins. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4. 9 small snap fasteners.

Gauge: 6 sts equal 1 inch; 8 rows equal 1 inch. For different size or shaping, turn to directions on page 26.

Jacket is worked with 2 threads throughout.

Back: With 2 threads and No. 3 needles, cast on 80 sts. Change to steel needles and knit in garter stitch for 10 rows. Change to larger needles, k 3, p 2 across. 2nd row: K 2, p 3 across. Repeat these 2 rows, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 8th row for 8 times; every 6th row twice; every 4th row twice; every other row for 3 times (110 sts on needle) and work should measure about 12½ inches. To shape armhole bind off 5 sts at beginning of the next 2 rows, then decrease 1st at both ends of every other row for 6 times. Work even until piece measures 6 inches from armhole. Bind off 6 sts at beginning of next 10 rows, bind off remaining 28 sts.

Left Front: Cast on 60 sts as before, work 10 rows in garter stitch with smaller needles. Change to larger needles and k 3, p 2 for 8 times, knit the remaining 20 sts. 2nd row: K 17, p 3, * k 2, p 3; repeat from * across. Repeat these 2 rows for 6 more rows. 9th row: Increase 1 st in 2nd st, and work in pattern always having the 20 sts at center in garter stitch. 10th short row: K 17, turn. 11th short row: K 17, turn.

Work in pattern, increasing 1 st in 2nd st at beginning of every 8th row, and working 2 short rows after every increase row. (These extra rows are in order to keep work even, as the garter stitch combined with stockinette stitch is inclined to draw work). Continue in this way until 8 increases have been made at side, then continue increases as in back, but always working the 2 short rows the same distance apart, that is, every 9th and 10th rows. Bind off 5 sts for armhole after all increases have been made, then decrease 1 st at armhole at beginning of row for 6 times, always continuing the 2 short rows as directed. When piece measures 4 inches from armhole, bind off 17 sts from front, then bind off 3 sts for 4 times at neck edge. Then bind off 6 sts from shoulder for 5 times, decreasing 1 st at beginning of every neck edge row.

Right Front: Cast on 60 sts as before, work 10 rows in garter stitch with smaller needles. Change to larger needles and k 20 sts, * p 2, k 3; repeat from * across row. 2nd row: P 3, k 2 for 8 times, p 3, k remaining 17 sts. Continue to work same as left front, with increases on side and short rows at center. The short rows will be the 9th and 10th rows. After 17 ridges have been worked from beginning of piece, work an opening for tab as follows: k 3, bind off 11, k 2, pattern across. In next row cast on 11 sts where the 11 sts were bound off. Work 3 more openings with 17 ridges between each, working piece to correspond with Left Front until there are 14 ridges after the last opening. Then bind off 17 sts from center and finish like Left Front.

Collar: With larger needles, cast on 100 sts, knit in garter stitch for 10 rows. Next row, make an opening as follows: k 3, bind off 11, k to end. On the row back, cast on 11 sts where bound off. Work in garter stitch for 12 rows: Bind off 10 sts at beginning of the next two rows: work 6 rows even, increase 1 st at beginning of next 2 rows, work 8 rows even; increase 1 st at the beginning of next 2 rows; work 6 rows even and bind off. Block the two fronts and back and sew shoulder seams.

Sleeve: From right side of work, with larger needles, pick up and k 38 sts to shoulder seam (after joining shoulder seams only), then pick up and k 39 sts on other side of seam (77 sts on needle). Working from wrong side, p 30, * k 2, p 3; repeat from * twice, k 2, turn. 2nd row: * p 2, k 3; repeat from * twice, p 2, k 1 from unworked sts on left needle, turn.

3rd row: P 1,* k 2, p 3; repeat from * twice, k 2, p 1 from unworked sts, turn. Continue to work in pattern, adding 1 st at end of every row for 4 more times, then add 2 sts each time until there are 6 sts left on each needle which should be worked in pattern all at once (77 sts). Work 3 rows even, decrease 1 st at both ends of every row for 3 rows, then every 8th row until there are 63 sts left. Work even until piece measures 17½ inches. Change to smaller needles and work 10 rows in garter stitch, then bind off. Block sleeves and sew sleeve and side seams.

Pocket: With larger needles, cast on 23 sts, k 3, p 2 for 4 times, k 3, turn. Work in pattern until piece measures 4½ inches. Work 6 rows of garter stitch with smaller needles and bind off. Make another to correspond.

Tab: Make 7 tabs as follows. With larger needles, cast on 12 sts, k 20 rows in garter stitch, then decrease 1 st at both ends of every row until 1 st is left, fasten off.

Tab Loops: With Green, ch 21. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each st of ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each st across and fasten off. Whip 1st tab on the 22nd ridge from bottom of left front, then one on every 18th ridge. The collar tab is whipped on the 7th ridge from neck. The loops are placed on the 5th ridge down from each opening, and the one at the neck is directly on the neckline. Pockets are placed just above the garter stitch of left and right fronts as illustrated, with stripes corresponding. Keep tabs in place with snap fasteners.
