Knitted Coat Pattern #662

The * is used in repeating – 'repeat from *' – means to repeat everything that follows the last *.

Knit = K; Purl = P; Stitch = st; Together = tog; Slip Stitch = sl st; Pass Slip Stitch Over = PSSO.

This pattern (complete in 1 sheet – both sides) contains directions for knitting a Misses' Coat in two colors of Sport Yarn. Work with two strands of yarn held together as one strand. Pattern includes Sizes: 10-12 and 14-16.

MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS AND SIZES

IMPORTANT: Before you start your Coat, it is most important that you make a gauge sample (as per gauge given). If after you have worked sample and it is smaller than desired size, either work looser or use a size larger (needle, hook). If your sample is larger than desired size, either tighten your tension or use a size smaller (needle, hook) until the gauge is reached. Any yarn which works into the gauge given may be substituted, however, material requirements may vary slightly depending upon the yarn you choose.

FOR KNITTING NEEDLES: 5 sts = 1 inch; 8 Pattern Rows = 1¼ inches.
FOR CROCHET HOOK: 3 sc = 1 inch.

COAT (BOTH SIZES)

NOTE: Directions are given for Size 10-12. Changes for Size 14-16 are given in parentheses.

BACK – (BOTH SIZES): With double strand (held together as one strand throughout - unless otherwise mentioned) of Main Color (Darker Color) cast on 85 (101) sts.
1ST ROW: K across row.
2ND ROW: K 1, P across row to within last st, K 1, tie a double strand of contrasting color (Light Color) onto Main Color; drop Main Color.
3RD ROW: With contrasting color K 1, * keeping yarn to back of work, sl next 3 sts as if to P, carrying yarn in back of sl sts loosely - work 3 K sts all in next st as follows: (K the front strand of next st, leave st on needle, yarn over needle, K the back strand of same st, slip st off needle); repeat from * across row, end with slip next 3 sts as if to P, K 1.
NOTE: Always slip sts as if to P unless otherwise mentioned - this will not be referred to again.
4TH ROW: K 1, * yarn to front, sl 3, yarn to back (counting each YO as 1 st) K 3; repeat from * across row but end last repeat with K 1; drop contrasting color.
5TH ROW: With Main Color K 1, * yarn to back, sl 1 as if to K, K 2 tog, PSSO, sl 3 as if to P; repeat from * across row, end with sl 1, K 2 tog, PSSO, K 1.

Repeat last 16 rows (from 1st to end of 16th row) 15 times (Both Sizes.)
For Size 14-16 Only – repeat from 1st to end of 8th row once more.
Back now measures 40 (41¼) inches from beginning to back neck edge.
Note: If longer or shorter length is desired, work more or less repeats to back neck edge ending with 16th (8th) row and allowing 2½ inches for each repeat.

NEXT ROW: With Main Color K across first 32 (36) sts, bind off next 21 (29) sts, K across remaining 31 (35) sts.
There are 32 (36) sts on each side of bound-off neck edge sts to be worked for shoulders.

FOR SIZE 10-12 ONLY – LEFT SHOULDER – 1ST ROW: Working across left shoulder sts only, with Main Color K 1, P across next 29 sts, K 2 tog; do not work in remaining 32 sts for right shoulder, leave these sts on needle to be worked later, tie a double strand of contrasting color; drop Main Color. 31 sts.
2ND ROW: With contrasting color K 2 tog, yarn to back, sl 1, pass first st over sl st, * sl 3, work 3 K sts all in next st; repeat from * across row, end with sl 3, K 1.
3RD ROW: K 1, * yarn to front, sl 3, yarn to back K 3; repeat from * across row to within last 4 sts, end with yarn to front, sl 2, yarn to back, K 2 tog; drop contrasting color.

FOR SIZE 10-12 ONLY – RIGHT SHOULDER – 1ST ROW: Working across sts for right shoulder, with wrong side facing, tie Main Color in first st, K the first 2 sts tog (neck edge), P across next 29 sts, K the last st, tie a double strand of contrasting; drop Main Color. 31 sts.
2ND ROW: With contrasting color K 1, * yarn to back, sl 3, work 3 K sts all in next st; repeat from * across row to within last 2 sts, K 2 tog.

LEFT FRONT – (BOTH SIZES): With double strand of Main Color cast on 49 (57) sts.
1ST THROUGH 10TH ROW: Repeat from 1st to end of 10th row (same as for Back) having 49 (57) sts at end of 8th row. 11 (13) complete bobbles.
11TH ROW: With contrasting color K 1, yarn to back, sl 1, * work 3 K sts all in next st, yarn to back, sl 3; repeat from * across row to within last 3 sts, end with K 3 (front edge).
12TH ROW: K 3, * yarn to front, sl 3, yarn to back, K 3; repeat from * across row, end with sl 1, K 1; drop contrasting color (side edge).
13TH ROW: With Main Color K 2, yarn to back sl 3, * sl next Main Color st as if to K, K 2 tog, PSSO, yarn to back, sl next 3 contrasting color sts as if to P; repeat from * across row but end last repeat with K last 3 contrasting color sts.

13TH ROW: With Main Color K 3, * sl next Main Color st as if to K, K 2 tog, PSSO, sl next 3 contrasting color sts as if to P; repeat from * across row, end with K last 2 sts.
14TH ROW: K 1, P 1, * sl 3, work 3 P sts all in next Main Color st; repeat from * across row, end with P 3; drop Main Color.
15TH ROW: With contrasting color K 3, sl 3, * P 3, sl 3; repeat from * across row, end with P 3, sl 1, K 1.
16TH ROW: K 1, sl 1, * P 3 tog, sl 3; repeat from * across row, end with K 3.

Repeat last 16 rows (from 1st to end of 16th row) 14 times (Both Sizes) or until front measures same as Left front to neckline shaping ending with 16th row.

NEXT ROW: With Main Color K across row.

SHAPE NECKLINE – (BOTH SIZES) – 1ST ROW: K 1, P across row to within last 14 (18) sts, tie a separate double strand of Main Color onto Main Color strand of yarn and with separate strand of yarn - bind off remaining 14 (18) sts; cut separate strand of yarn and contrasting color. 35 (39) sts on needle.
2ND ROW: Tie contrasting color with contrasting color, K 2 tog, * work 3 K sts all in next st, sl 3; repeat from * across row, end with K 1.
3RD ROW: K 1, * sl 3, K 3; repeat from * across row, end with sl 3, K 2, K 2 tog; drop contrasting color.
4TH ROW: With Main Color * sl 3 as if to P, sl next Main Color st as if to K, K 2 tog, PSSO; repeat from * across row, end with K 1.
5TH ROW: K 1, * work 3 P sts all in next st, sl 3; repeat from * across row, P 1, P 2 tog; drop Main Color.
6TH ROW: With contrasting color K 2 tog, sl 3, * P 3, sl 3; repeat from * across row, end with K 1.
7TH ROW: K 1, * sl 3, P 3 tog; repeat from * across row, end with sl 3, K 1; drop contrasting color.
8TH ROW: With Main Color K 2 tog, K across remaining sts.
9TH ROW: K 1, P across row to within last 2 sts, P 2 tog; drop Main Color.
There are 31 (3 5) sts on needle.
10TH ROW: With contrasting color sl 1, K 1, PSSO, sl 2, * work 3 K sts all in next st, sl 3; repeat from * 5 (6) times, work 3 K sts all in next st, sl 1, K 1.
11TH ROW: K 1, sl 1, * K 3, sl 3; repeat from * across row, end with K 3, sl 1, P 2 tog; drop contrasting color.

Now work same as Left front from 12th row of Neckline Shaping to end.

BLOCKING: Pin each section to correct size and shape on a padded surface, cover each section with a wet cloth (do not steam with iron) - permit to dry thoroughly.

FINISHING: Using a darning needle and double strand of Main Color yarn, sew shoulder seams together.

SLEEVES – (BOTH SIZES): With right side facing - measure 8 (9¼) inches down from shoulder seam along Back and Front armhole edge, place a marker at each end.
1ST ROW: With right side facing and using double strand of Main Color, pick up and K 73 (81) sts between markers.
Starting with 2nd row, work even in pattern same as Back until sleeve measures 17½ inches (Both Sizes) ending with 16th row or until length desired and ending with 8th or 16th row allowing 1¼ inches for 8 rows; cut contrasting color. There are 73 (81) sts and 18 (20) complete bobbles in sleeve at end of 8th row.
NEXT ROW: With Main Color K across row; cut one strand of yarn only leaving a length.

START HEM – (BOTH SIZES) – 1ST ROW: Working with a single strand of Main Color throughout hem, K across row for hemline.
2ND ROW: K across row.
3RD ROW: P across row.
Repeat last 2 rows once; bind off all sts at end of last row.

BLOCKING: Same as for Fronts and Back.

FINISHING: Sew side and sleeve seams being careful to match all rows.
Fold sleeve hem under to wrong side at hemline and with a single strand of Main Color sew hem in position.

NECK BAND - (BOTH SIZES): With right side facing and starting at Right front neck edge, with double strand of Main Color, pick up and K 14 (18) bound-off sts at neck edge, pick up and K 18 (20) sts evenly spaced along side neck edge to shoulder seam, 4 (4) sts along shaped neck edge for Back, pick up and K 13 (15) sts across Back neck edge skipping approximately every 3rd (2nd) st, pick up and K 4 (4) sts along next shaped edge of Back, 18 (20) sts along side neck edge of Left front, pick up and K remaining 14 (18) bound-off sts. There are 85 (99) sts on needle.
1ST ROW: K 1, * P 1, K 1; repeat from * across row.
2ND ROW: P 1, * K 1, P 1; repeat from * across row.
Repeat last 2 rows (1st and 2nd rows) once; repeat 1st row once more; bind off all sts; cut yarn.

EDGE – (BOTH SIZES) – 1ST ROW: With right side facing and using crochet hook, join a double strand of Main Color with an sc over end st of last row of neck band at Left front edge, working over end sts of neck band rows - work (skip end st of next row, 1 sc over end st of next row) twice, working down Left front edge over end sts of rows work 114 sc evenly spaced (Both Sizes) to first row (117 sc along front edge), working across lower edge along opposite side of cast-on sts work 3 sc (corner) in first st, 1 sc in each st across lower edge to within last st at Right front corner, 3 sc in last st (corner), working up Right front edge over end sts of rows work 114 sc evenly spaced (Both Sizes) to within neck band, working over end sts of neck band rows, 1 sc over end st of first row, work (skip end st of next row, 1 sc over end st of next row) twice; do not work across sts of last row of neck band.
2ND ROW: Ch 1, do not turn, work a reverse sc as follows: working from left to right insert hook in last st made, yarn over hook and complete as sc (this completes first reverse sc), * skip next sc to the right of last st worked, work next reverse sc by inserting hook in 2nd st before last reverse st made, yarn over and complete sc ; repeat from * to corresponding point of Left front neck band; cut yarn.

FINISHING: Fold neck band in half to wrong side of first row of neck band to form roll collar and pin in position.
With double strand of Main Color sew in position.
SLEEVE EDGE – 1ST ROUND: With right side facing, join a double strand of Main Color with a sl st in seam at lower edge, ch 1, working across sts of hemline row work 1 sc in each st across row, join with a sl st in first sc. There are 73 (81) sts.
2ND ROUND: Ch 1, do not turn, work in reverse sc in same manner as front edge, join with a sl st in first reverse sc; cut yarn.
