Envelope Bag Pattern

You can make this bag all by yourself! The lesson teaches how to use knit and purl stitches for a seed-stitch border and for the stockinette-stitch center. Won't this be a wonderful gift for Mommy!

SIZE: About 5" x 8".

MATERIALS: American Thread Company "Dawn" Knitting Worsted, 4 fold, 2 1-oz. skeins. Straight knitting needles No. 3 (standard). English size, 10. Steel crochet hook No. 1. One 7" slide fastener. 12" square of lining material.

GAUGE: 6 sts = 1"; 10 rows = 1".

Cast on 63 sts. Row 1: Always sl first edge st, k last edge st through back of st. K 5 for gusset, k 1, p 1 alternately across, ending with k 1 (seed st), to within 6 sts from end, k 5 for gusset, edge st.

Row 2: Edge st, p 5 for gusset, k 1, p 1 alternately across, ending with k 1, to within 6 sts from end, p 5 for gusset, edge st. Work these 2 rows alternately for 1½".

Next row: Edge st, k 5 for gusset, work 9 sts in seed st, k 33, 9 sts in seed st, k 5 for gusset, edge st.

Following row: Edge st, p 5 for gusset, 9 sts in seed st, p 33, 9 sts in seed st, p 5 for gusset, edge st. Work last 2 rows alternately for 2". Continuing gusset on each side, work seed st across for 1½". Bind off 5 sts for gusset at beg of next 2 rows. Work seed st for 2" from bound-off sts of gusset.

Next row: Edge st, 9 sts in seed st, k 33, 9 sts in seed st, edge st. Work other side of bag to correspond. Bind off in seed st.

Finishing: Block and steam bag, right side down. Fold bag, sew gusset to other side. With hook, work s c around opening. Cut a piece of cardboard or buckram about ¼" smaller than bag, baste it to wrong side. Sew in slide fastener and lining.

Tassel: Wind yarn closely over 3 fingers of left hand, tie at one end, cut and trim on other end; wind yarn around top of tassel. With 2 strands of yarn, ch 10, attach one end to tassel, other to zipper.
