Materials: 1 Skein KENTUCKY ALL PURPOSE YARN—1 Pair Number 3 Needles, 10 inch.

Gauge: 5 sts = 1 inch; 5 rows = 1 inch.

This mitten is made open, and when finished is sewed up on one side.

Cuff: Cast on 47 sts. Row 1—K 1, P 1, (Repeat across the row). Row 2—Purl back. Repeat these two rows until the cuff measures 3 inches.

Hand Section: 1st Row—Knit across, reducing to 37 sts by knitting approximately every 4th and 5th sts tog. Purl back. Continue knitting a row and purling a row for ¾ inch.

Thumb: It is now time to start the thumb. On every knit row continue to add a st on each side of the thumb until you have increased the thumb to 14 sts, moving the colored markers from knit row to knit row as you increase the sts. Now complete thumb by knitting a row and purling a row for 1½”. It is now time to reduce the thumb. K 2, K 2 tog, K 4, K 2 tog. K 4. (You now have 12 sts on needle.) Purl back. Reduce again on 2nd knit row as follows: K 3, K 2 tog, K 3, K 2 tog, K 2. (You now have 10 sts. on needle.) Purl back. Reduce again in 3rd knit row by K 4, K 2 tog., K 4. (You now have 9 sts.) At this point thread a tapestry needle with the yarn and pick up 9 sts. Draw them together and fasten, forming tip of thumb. Sew up thumb. Knit back on 18 sts, add 1 st. in order to join the remaining 18 sts. Purl back. Then K 18, K 19th and 20th sts tog, and continue knitting to end of row. Purl back. (There are now 36 sts on needle.) K 18, K 2 tog, and knit to end of row. Knit a row and purl a row for 3". At this point begin to shape the mitten. On next knit row, knit 1st 2 sts tog, then knit center 2 sts tog, and finally knit the last 2 sts tog. (32 sts. on needle.) Knit Row—K 6, K 2 tog. Repeat this across the row. (28 sts. on needle.) Purl back. Knit Row—K 5, K 2 tog. Repeat this across the row. (24 sts on needle.) Purl back. Knit Row—K 4, K 2 tog. Repeat this across the row. (20 sts. on needle.) Purl back. Knit Row—K 2, K 2 tog. Repeat this across the row. (15 sts. on needle.) Purl back. Slip the 15 sts on to a tapestry needle, draw up tightly, fold mitten and sew up seam.
