MATERIALS—Bucilla or Fleisher’s 100% Imported French Angora, for Mittens with Short Cuff, 5, 10 gram balls; for Mittens with Gauntlet Cuff, 8, 10 gram balls.

“Boye” Sock Needles, 1 set Size 3.

GAUGE: 13 sts = 2 inches

SHORT CUFF—Cast on 44 sts, divide on 3 needles. Join; work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 2½ ins.; mark last st as end of round.

Hand—K 1 round decreasing 2 sts in round; 42 sts. K ½ in. even.

First inc. round for thumb gore—Inc. 1 st in first st, k 1, inc. 1 st in next st, k to end (5 sts in thumb gore). K 3 rounds even.

2nd inc. round—Inc. 1 st in first st, k 3, inc. 1 st in next st, k to end (7 sts in thumb gore).

Continue to inc. 1 st each side of thumb gore every 4th round having 2 sts more between incs. in each successive inc. round until there are 15 sts in gore. Work 3 rounds even. Slip the 15 thumb sts to a thread. Cast on 3 sts; 42 sts. K even until 6 ins. above cuff or to within 1½ ins. of desired finished length.

First dec. round—* K 4, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around; 35 sts. K 3 rounds even.

2nd dec. round—* K 3, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around; 28 sts. K 3 rounds even.

3rd dec. round—* K 2, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around; 21 sts. K 3 rounds even.

4th dec. round—* K 1, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around; 14 sts. K 1 round even.

Next round—K 2 tog. 7 times. Break off leaving an end. Draw end through all 7 sts tog. tightly. Fasten off.

Thumb—Slip the 15 thumb sts to 2 needles, pick up and k 4 sts on the 3 cast-on sts; 19 sts. K even until thumb measures 1¾ ins. above picked up sts.

First dec. round—* K 2, k 2 tog.; repeat from * 3 times, k 3; 15 sts. K 2 rounds even.

2nd dec. round—* K 1, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around; 10 sts. K 1 round even.

Next round—K 2 tog. 5 times; 5 sts. Finish same as top of mitten. Make other mitten in same way. Trim with sequins or rhinestones as illustrated if desired.

GAUNTLET CUFF—Cast on 55 sts, divide on 3 needles. Join; work k 2, p 3 ribbing for 5 ins., mark last st as end of round.

Dec. round—* K 2, p 2 tog., p 1; repeat from * around; 44 sts. Work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 2 ins.

Hand—Finish hand and thumb same as for mittens with short cuff.
