Girls Argyle Socks Pattern #611

Size: 8½ to 11

REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 3-ounces of 3-ply Sock Yarn (Blue); ½-ounce each of pink & white 3-ply Sock Yarn
NEEDLES: 1-pr #2 single pointed
STITCH HOLDERS: Two

GAUGE: 8 sts to an inch. 12 rows to 1 inch.

   Using the #2 needles and the blue yarn; cast on 64 sts, and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1½-inches. On the last row of ribbing decrease 4 sts (60 sts). Knit 28 sts; knit 2 tog; place the remaining sts onto a st holder. On the sts that are on the needle work as follows: * Turn; sl 1, purl to end of row. Turn; knit to within last 2 sts, knit 2 tog. Repeat from * until all sts are decreased. Place sts off st holder onto needle. Tie blue yarn at the beginning of a knit row. * K 2 tog; knit to end of row. Turn; purl across row. Repeat from * until all sts are decreased.
   CENTER WHITE DIAMOND: With the white yarn pick up 2 sts on right side of work in space between decreases. Turn; slip 1, p 1, insert needle from right side of work and pick up 1 st on edge of corresponding blue row (always pick up the sts through the 2 loops between each knot made by decrease). Turn, sl 1, k 2, on right side of work pick up a st. Turn and continue to work in this manner until there are 20 sts on the needle. Turn, purl across row. Turn, k 2 tog, k to last 2 sts, k 2 tog. Continue to decrease 1 st each end of needle every knitted row until all sts are decreased.
   SIDE PINK DIAMOND: With pink yarn, pick up and knit 2 sts in space between Blue point and white diamond and work a diamond as before.
   WHITE ½ DIAMOND AT SIDE: With white yarn, pick up and knit 2 sts in space between blue point and pink diamond, work as before, until there are 20 sts on the needle; place these sts onto a stitch holder. On the other side of the leg make a full pink diamond and a ½-white diamond, leaving the 20 sts of white onto a stitch holder.
   CENTER: With the blue yarn, pick up and knit 2 sts in space between the 2 pink diamonds and work as before picking up the sts at each side until there are 20 sts on the needle. Knit 5 sts off 2nd st holder; place all 25 sts from needle onto a free st holder. Knit the remaining 15 sts from st holder for first half of heel. HEEL: * Turn; purl across next row. Turn; slip 1, knit remaining sts. Repeat from * until 23 rows have been made in all; ending with a knit row. Shaping: P 4, p 2 tog, p 1; turn; slip 1, k 5, turn; p 5, p 2 tog, p 1; turn; slip 1, k 6, turn; p 6, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; slip 1, k 7, turn; p 7, p 2 tog, p 1; turn; slip 1, k 8, turn; p 8, p 2 tog, p 1, (10 sts). Pick up and purl 12 sts along side of heel; purl sts from center st holder; purl the 20 sts from last st holder. NEXT ROW: K 15 sts, place remaining sts back onto a st holder. Turn; on the 15 heel sts work in stockinette st for 23 rows (always slipping the first st on a purl row) ending with a purl row. SHAPING: K 4, sl 1, k 1, psso, turn; sl 1, p 5, turn; k 5, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 6, turn; k 6, sl 1, k 1, psso, turn; sl 1, p 7, turn; k 7, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 8, turn; k 8, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1. (10 sts). Pick up and knit 12 sts along side of heel. Place a marker on needle; knit center 30 sts from st holder; place a marker on needle; knit remaining 22 sts.
   GUSSET DECREASES: Purl across row, keeping markers in place. Next row: K to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; knit across the 30 instep sts; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. Repeat these last 2 rows until 60 sts remain on the needle. Drop off markers. Work even in stockinette stitch until the sock measures from the back of heel, (6½-ins. for size 8½-9); (7½-ins. for size 9½-10); (8½-ins for size 10½-11); ending with a knit row. NEXT ROW: Purl 15 sts; place a marker on the needle; purl 30 sts; place another marker on the needle; purl the remaining 15 sts.

   TOE DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to within 3 sts of 2nd marker; k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. Purl across next row, keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 20 sts remain. Bind off and sew across toe, having decreases at sides or weave sts together. Sew sole and back seams. MAKE THE OTHER SOCK THE SAME WAY.
