SIZES—9 (9½-10).

NOTE—Underline or circle the num­bers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 9, the second for size 9½, the third for size 10.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN SPINDRIFT 2 (2-2) balls; 1 set double point needles No. 2; 1 set double point needles No. 5.

GAUGE—6 sts. = 1 inch. 8 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERN—Stockinette St. (Knit every round).

Using No. 2 double point needles, cast on 48 sts. (16 sts. on each of 3 needles). Join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in ribbing of K2, P2, for 4 inches. Change to No. 5 needles and knit round and round for 1 inch. Knit 24 sts. Slip remaining 24 sts. onto 2 needles for instep. On the 24 sts. of heel, work back and forth in stockinette st. for 20 rows, slipping the first st. of every row. Turn heel as follows: P14, P2 tog, P1, turn. Slip 1, K5, slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O, K1, turn. Slip 1, P6, P2 tog, P1, turn. Continue in this manner to work one st. more each row until all heel sts. are worked (14 sts. on needle). Divide these sts. on 2 needles. Place instep sts. on 1 needle. Pick up 11 sts. along side of heel on first needle (18 sts.) Knit across instep sts. on 2nd needle. Pick up 11 sts. along other side of heel on 3rd needle and knit the 7 heel sts. onto 3rd needle (18 sts.). Dec. heel as follows: Round 1—Knit to within 3 sts. of end of 1st needle, K2 tog, K1. Knit across 2nd needle. At the beg. of 3rd needle, K1, slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O. and knit to end of needle. Round 2—Knit. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 12 sts. on each heel needle. Knit round and round until foot measures 7 (7½-8) inches from back of heel. (This is point where any adjustments in foot length are made. Allowing 2 inches for toe shaping, lengthen or shorten the foot before start­ing to shape toe). Dec. for toe as follows: Round 1—knit to within 3 sts. of end of first needle, K2 tog., K1. On second needle, K1, slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., knit to within 3 sts. of end of needle, K2 tog., K1. On 3rd needle, K1, slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O. and knit to end of needle. Round 2—Knit. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 8 sts. on instep needle and 4 sts. on each heel needle. After last dec., work last 4 sts. onto first needle. Break yarn, leaving about 12 ins.
