Teen sizes (length, 16 ½ inches, foot 9 [9 ½-10] inches).
Three-ply fingering yarn: 2 [2-3] ounces white and 2 ounces red.
Knitting needles: 1 pair No. 1; 1 set (4) double-pointed needles, No. 1.
9 stitches = 1 inch.
With red yarn, and single-pointed needles, cast on 78 stitches. Work in ribbing of knit 1, purl 1 for 1 ½ inches. Break off red, attach white. Work in pattern as follows:
1st row: (Purl 1, knit 2) 4 times; purl 2, knit 15, purl 2, (knit 2, purl 1) twice; knit 4, (purl 1, knit 2) twice; purl 2, knit 15, purl 2, (knit 2, purl 1) 4 times. 2nd row: (Knit 1, purl 2) 4 times; knit 2, purl 15, knit 2, (purl 2, knit 1) twice; purl 4, (knit 1, purl 2) twice; knit 2, purl 15, knit 2, (purl 2, knit 1) 4 times.
Repeat last 2 rows until work measures 6 ¾ inches from beginning. Begin pattern in panels.
1st row: Work to within the 15 knit stitches of first panel, knit 7; attach red, knit 1 red, drop red, knit 7, work to within 2nd panel, knit 7; attach another ball of red, knit 1 red, drop red, knit 7, work to end. 2nd row: (Work to within panel, purl 6 white, purl 3 red, purl 6 white) twice; work to end. 3rd row: Repeat first row. 4th through 6th rows: Work without pattern, in panels. Repeat last 6 rows once more.
Work heart pattern and decrease 1 stitch at each end of every first heart row as follows: 1st row: Knit 2 together, (work in rib as before to within panel, knit 3 white, knit 3 red, knit 3 white, knit 3 red, knit 3 white) twice; work in rib as before to within last 2 stitches, knit 2 together.
Beginning with 2nd row, follow chart until 11th row has been completed. 12th through 14th rows: Work in rib as before without pattern in panels. Repeat last 14 rows 4 times more (5th heart completed, 68 stitches on needle). Break off white. Next row: Slip first 17 stitches on a stitch holder, rejoin white and work in rib across next 34 stitches, turn. Place remaining 17 stitches on another stitch holder.
Continue in rib on center 34 stitches for 6 [6 ½-7] inches, ending with a wrong side row. Break off white and slip stitches on a stitch holder.
With right side facing, arrange the 2 sets of 17 stitches each from holders on 1 needle and attach red. 1st row: * Slip 1, knit 1. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: Purl across. Repeat last 2 rows 12 times more.
TO SHAPE HEEL
1st row: Knit 23, knit 2 together, turn. 2nd row: Purl 13, purl 2 together, turn. 3rd row: Knit 13, knit 2 together, turn. Repeat last 2 rows until 14 stitches remain, ending with a purl row. Next row: Knit 14, then pick up and knit 18 stitches across one side of heel. Following row: Purl across, then pick up and purl 18 stitches across other side of heel. Next row: Knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit to within last 3 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 1. Following row: Purl across. Repeat last 2 rows until 30 stitches remain.
Work even in stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) until foot measures the same as instep, ending with a knit row. Do not break off.
TO SHAPE TOE
Arrange all stitches of instep and foot on 3 double-pointed needles. Slip first and last stitch of instep onto a needle of foot. (1st needle = instep: 32 stitches; 2nd and 3rd needles: 16 stitches each). Work in rounds.
1st round: 1st needle: Knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit to within last 3 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 1. 2nd needle: Knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit to end. 3rd needle: Knit to within last 3 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 1.
2nd round: Knit around.
Repeat last 2 rounds until 28 stitches remain. Break off, leaving an 18 inch end. Join stitches with Kitchener Stitch. Join leg and instep seams.
