JACKET

Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 90 sts and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), decreasing 1 st at both ends of 1 row every inch 3 times (84 sts). Work straight until piece measures 11½ inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 70 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 28 sts remain. Bind off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 54 sts and work in stockinette st, decreasing 1 st at side edge every 5th row, 4 times (50 sts). Work straight until piece measures 3¾ inches. On next row, starting at front edge, make a buttonhole 4 sts in from edge. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 4 sts; then, on next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off). Hereafter continue as before, making 2 more decreases at side edge every 5th row. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches. Then inc. 1 st at side edge every 5th row until there are 54 sts on needle; at the same time, when piece measures 8¼ inches, make another buttonhole as before on next row and every 3¼ inches thereafter until 5 buttonholes in all are made. Work straight until piece measures 11½ inches.

To Shape Armhole: Starting at side edge, bind off 8 sts and continue across. Hereafter dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 39 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, starting at front edge, bind off 8 sts (thus starting neck shaping), and continue across. Hereafter dec. 1 st at neck edge every row 4 times, and every other row 6 times; at the same time, when armhole measures 7½ inches, shape shoulders by binding off 3 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are worked off.

Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, omitting buttonholes and reversing shapings.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 42 sts and work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of 1 row every inch until there are 74 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 16½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 4 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 16 sts remain. Bind off. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Work 2 rows of s c all around edges of jacket and around bottom of sleeves. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

To form plaid, work diagonal rows of running stitches 2 inches apart, picking up 1 st only and passing over 3 sts (See stitch detail).

SKIRT

Starting at bottom, with circular needle cast on 282 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in stockinette st (k around), for 3½ inches. * Then on next rnd dec. 6 sts at equal distances apart. Work 9 rnds straight. Repeat from * until 222 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 22 inches. ** Make another decrease rnd as before. Work 4 rnds straight. Repeat from ** until 174 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 28 inches or desired length. Bind off. With crochet hook work a row of s c around top of skirt. Then, * ch 5, sl st in 8th rnd down from top on wrong side and 4 sts to left, ch 5, sl st in 8th st from last st at top edge. Repeat from * around. Run elastic through casing. Work 2 rnds of s c around bottom of skirt.
