GAUGE: 3 sts. = 1 inch
Cast on 42 (46-50) sts. with No. 9 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 3 inch. Change to No. 11 needles and work even for 1 inch. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of the row every ½ inch 4 times. With 50 (54-58) sts. work even until entire piece measures 14 (14½-15) inch. or any des. length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 4 (5-6) sts., at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts., decr. 1 st. at each end of needle every other row until 32 (36-40) sts. are left. Work even until 8¼ (8½-8¾) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 4 (4-4) rows 5 (6-7) sts., rem. 12 sts. bind off for neck.
Cast on 22 (24-26) sts. with No. 9 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 3 inch. Change to No. 10 needles and pattern:
1st row: K8, P1, K8, P1, K4, (6-8).
2nd row: P4, (6-8) K1, P8, K1, P8.
3rd row: K8, P1, slip next 2 sts. to an extra needle and hold in front of work, K next 2 sts., K the 2 sts. from extra needle, slip next 2 sts. to an extra needle and hold in back of work, K next 2 sts. K the next 2 sts. from extra needle, P1, K4 (6-8).
4th row: Like 2nd row.
5th row: Like 1st row.
Repeat 4th and 5th row 3 times more.
12th row: Like 3rd row.
Cont. to work this way cabling the K sts. every 10th row on right side.
Work even for 1 inch. Incr. 1 st. at armhole edge every ½ inch 6 times. With 28 (30-32) sts. work even until the entire piece measures like back to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next row at armhole edge 4 (5-6) sts. and at the beg. of the next row at armhole edge 2 sts. Decr. 1 st. at armhole edge twice. At the same time decr. for neck 1 st. at center edge every 3rd row until 12 (14-14) sts. are left over. Work as high as back and bind off for shoulder at armhole edge 6 (7-7) sts. twice. Work the other front to correspond.
Sew up side and shoulder seams. Starting at lower edge of right front, crochet 1 row s.c. around the entire front of vest, ch. 1, turn, work 5 buttonholes in 2nd row on right front, starting first buttonhole at beg. of V neck: * ch. 1, skip 1, 1 s.c. in each of the next 5 sts. repeat from * to end of row. Ch. 1, turn, work 1 more row s.c. around the entire front, working 1 s.c. in each ch. 1 space of previous row. Fasten off. Work 2 rows s.c. around each armhole (54 sts.). Sew buttons in place and block to size.
