Pineapple Afghan Pattern

Afghan measures 50 x 64 inches.

CHADWICK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E.232: 19 skeins (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins) of No. 360 Wood Brown; 5 skeins of No. 253 Tangerine and 3 skeins of No. 676 Emerald.

Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 5 (3¾ mm. size).

GAUGE: 5 sts make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.

NOTE: When changing from one color to another, always twist the unused color around the other to prevent making holes. When carrying unused color across, do not pull yarn up too tightly.

FIRST STRIP (Make 4) … Starting at short end with Wood Brown, cast on 35 sts. Following chart, work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until top of chart (33rd row) has been completed. Break off Tangerine. 34rd row: With Wood Brown p across. Now work in stockinette st for 34 more rows. The last 68 rows con­stitute the pattern. Work in pattern until 7 pine­apples have been completed, ending with a purl row of Wood Brown. Bind off.

SECOND STRIP (Make 3) … Starting at short end with Wood Brown, cast on 35 sts. Work in stockinette st for 34 rows. Following chart, work in pattern until 33rd row of chart has been completed. Break off Tan­gerine. Next row: With Wood Brown p across. The last 68 rows constitute pattern. Work in pattern until 6 pineapples have been completed. Then with Wood Brown work 35 more rows. Bind off.
   Block strips and sew long sides together, alternating first and second strips.

BORDER 1st rnd: With Wood Brown, work a row of sc around all sides, making 3 sc in each corner. Join. Hereafter pick up only the back loop of each sc. 2nd rnd: Attach Emerald to same place as sl st, sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in each corner sc. Join and break off. 3rd rnd: Pick up Wood Brown, sc in same place as sl st, * sc at base of next sc (long sc made), sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, making long sc, sc and long sc at corners. Join. 4th and 5th rnds: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds, using Tangerine instead of Emerald on 4th rnd, and having long sc's fall between previous long sc's on 5th rnd.
