MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY WOOL, 4 balls (¾ oz. balls).
Clark's O.N.T. Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 and 1 pair No. 4.
2 small pearl buttons.
GAUGE: 8 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.
FRONT … With No. 1 needles, cast on 68 sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1¼ inches. Change to No. 4 needles. Next row: Knit, increasing in every 4th st across to 84 sts. Work in pattern as follows: 1st row: * P 4, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending with p 4. 2nd row: * K 4, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 4. 3rd row: Same as 1st row. 4th row: K 4, p 1, k 4, * p 1, slip next 2 sts onto a toothpick or double- pointed needle, and hold in back of work, k next 2 sts, then k the 2 sts from double-pointed needle (cable made). P 1, k 4. Repeat from * across, until there are 7 cables, then (p 1, k 4) twice. Repeat these 4 rows until piece measures 8 inches in all. Next row: K 6 sts, slip these 6 sts onto a safety pin to be worked later for Sleeve, work in pattern across to last 6 sts, slip these last 6 sts onto another safety pin. Turn and work over the remaining sts in pattern for 2 inches. Next row: With right side facing, work in pattern across 19 sts, * k next 4 sts, k 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog. Repeat from * 2 more times; k 4, work in pattern for remainder of row. Following row: Work in pattern across 19 sts, k next 28 sts, work in pattern to end of row. Repeat the last row 4 more times (3 ridges on right side of work). Next row: Work in pattern across 19 sts, k 4 sts, bind off next 20 sts for front of neck, then finish row. Turn and work over the last set of sts only (keeping 4 sts in garter st at neck edge) until piece measures 4 inches from sts on safety pin. Bind off loosely in pattern. Attach yarn to sts of other shoulder and work to correspond.
BACK … Same as Front to 2 inches above underarm. Omit neck shaping and continue to work as before until piece measures 3½ inches above underarm. Next row: With right side facing, work in pattern across 19 sts, * k next 4 sts, k 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog. Repeat from * 2 more times; k 4. Work in pattern for remainder of row. Following row: Work in pattern across 19 sts, k next 28 sts. Work in pattern to end of row. Repeat the last row 4 more times (3 ridges on right side of work). Bind off loosely in pattern.
RIGHT SLEEVE … Starting at armhole edge, sew shoulder seam for 1½ inches. With right side facing, using No. 4 needles, slip the 6 sts of Front off safety pin onto right-hand needle, join yarn, pick up 52 sts around armhole edge, then k across the 6 sts on other safety pin (64 sts on needle). 1st, 2nd and 3rd rows: Work in pattern as on Front. 4th row: (K 4, p 1) 3 times; (cable, p 1, k 4, p 1) 4 times; k 4, p 1, k 4. Work in pattern as established for 2 inches. Dec 1 st at both ends of next row and every inch thereafter until 50 sts remain. Work straight until Sleeve measures 9 inches in all. Change to No. 1 needles and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1½ inches. Bind off loosely in ribbing.
LEFT SLEEVE … Work to correspond.
FINISHING … Press with hot iron through damp cloth. Work a row of sc along shoulder opening, making a ch-3 buttonloop on each front edge. Sew side and sleeve seams with one continuous seam. Sew on buttons.
