3 (4-5) skeins Knitting Worsted, Orlon Sayelle or Wintuk (2 oz. skein)
1 pair knitting needles each No. 5 and No. 8
5 (5-6) buttons

GAUGE: 9 st. = 2 inch.

PATTERN:
1st row right side: *P1, slip 1 (yarn in front) repeat from * across row end P1
2nd row wrong side: P across row
3rd row: P2 * slip 1 (yarn in front), P1 repeat from * across row end P2
4th row: Work as 2nd row
Repeat these 4 rows once, then repeat 1st and 2nd row once
11th row: K across row
12th row: P across row
13th row: Work as 11th row
14th row: Work as 12th row
Repeat these 14 rows for pattern.

BACK:
Cast on 50 (54-58) sts. with No. 5 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for (1½-2) inch. Incr. 3 sts. (all sizes) at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 8 needles and pattern. With 53 (57-61) sts. work even until the entire piece measures 7½ (8½-9½) inch. or any des. length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 4 (4-3) sts., at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. (all sizes) (41 (45-51) sts. left). Work even for 5 (5½-5¾) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 4 (4-4) rows 6 (7-8) sts., rem. 17 (17-19) sts. bind off for neck.
NOTE: For boys work buttonholes in left front border.
For girls work buttonholes in right front border.

LEFT FRONT:
Cast on 30 (32-34) sts. with No. 5 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 1½ (1½-2) inch., keeping the 5 center front sts. in seed st. for border. Incr. 2 (4-4) sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 8 needles and pattern. With 32 (36-38) sts. work even until the entire piece measures like back to underarm. Bind off at armhole edge at the beg. of the next row 4 (5-4) sts. and at the beg. of the next row at same edge 2 sts. (all sizes) (26 (29-32) sts. left). Work even for 3 (3½-3¾) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for neck 8 (9-8) sts. at neck edge and then 2 sts. at same edge every other row until 12 (14-16) sts. are left over. Work as high as back and bind off for shoulder at armhole edge 6 (7-8) sts. twice.

RIGHT FRONT:
Work as Left Front reversing all shapings. Work 5 (5-6) buttonholes evenly spaced apart in front border, placing first buttonhole ½ inch from beg. and last one 2 rows below neckline. (To make a buttonhole: K1, P1, bind off 2 sts., work to end of row. On next row cast on 2 sts. over the 2 bound off sts. of previous row.)

SLEEVE:
Cast on 26 (30-34) sts. with No. 5 needles and work: in ribbing K1, P1 for 1½ (2-2) inch. Incr. 3 sts. (all sizes) at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 8 needles and pattern. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 6th row until 37 (41-45) sts. are on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 8 (9-10) inch. or any des. length to underarm. Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 3 sts. (all sizes.) Decr. 1 st. at the beg. of each row until the cap measures 2 (2½-2½) inch. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row 2 (2-3) times. Bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of the next 4 rows (all sizes). Bind off rem. sts. Work the other sleeve to correspond.

FINISHING:
Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Collar: Right side facing you pick up with No. 5 needles 58 (62-66) sts. and work in ribbing K1, P1 incr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 3rd row until collar measures 2½ (3-3¼) inch. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Sew buttons in place and block to size.
