Slipover and Hat Pattern

Size 1 year
Sizes 3 and 5 years in parentheses

MATERIAL:
5 (6-7) skeins Knitting Worsted, Orlon Sayelle or Wintuk (2 oz. skein)
1 pair knitting needles each No. 5 and No. 8
1 crochet hook No. 6 or G
1 stitch holder

GAUGE: 5 sts. = 1 inch

PATTERN:
1st row: K across row
2nd row: P across row
3rd row: * K2 † pull a loop through 3rd st., K the first st., pull the loop over this st. K the 2nd and 3rd st. repeat from † once more, K4, then repeat from * across row end K2 instead of K4.
4th row: P across row
Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.

BACK:
Cast on 56 (56-64) sts. with No. 5 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 1 (1½-1½) inch. Incr. 4 (4-6) sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 8 needles and pattern. (FOR SIZE 3 ONLY: Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of row every 1 inch twice.) With 60 (64-70) sts. work even until the entire piece measures 6 (7½-9) inch. or any des. length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 4 (5-6) sts., at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. (all sizes) (48 (59-54) sts. left). Work even for 5 (5½-6) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 6 (4-6) rows 5 (8-6) sts., rem. 18 sts. (all sizes) bind off for neck.

FRONT:
Work Front as Back until 3½ (4-4) inch. above armhole bind off. Work across 17 (18-20) sts. and slip them to a holder to be worked later. Bind off for neck next 14 sts. (all sizes). Work over rem. 17 (18-20) sts. only. Decr. 1 st. at neck edge every other row until 15 (16-18) sts. are left over. Work as high as back and bind off for shoulder at armhole edge 5 (8-6) sts. 3 (2-3) times.

SLEEVE:
Cast on 32 (32-36) sts. with No. 5 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 1½ (2-2) inch. Incr. 2 (6-8) sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. (For size 1 and 5 start and end pattern with K4. For Size 3 start and end pattern with K1). Change to No. 8 needles and pat­tern. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 6th row until 40 (44-48) sits, are on needle, working incr. sts. in stock, st. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 7 (8-9) inch. or any des. length to underarm. Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 3 (4-5) sts. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. of each row until cap measures 2 (2½-3) inch. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row twice (all sizes). Bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of the next 4 rows. Bind off rem. sts. Work the other sleeve to correspond.

FINISHING:
Sew up sides, sleeves, right shoulder and 1 inch on left shoulder. Sew in sleeves. Neckband: Right side fac­ing you pick up with No. 5 needles 56 (60-64) sts. and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2 (2½-3) inch. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. With No. 6 crochet hook work 3 rows s.c. around shoulder opening. Sew 3 snaps to opening and block to size.

HAT:
With No. 5 needles cast on 68 (72-80) sts. and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 4 inch. (all sizes). (FOR SIZE 1: incr. 1 st. at each end of last row of ribbing. FOR SIZES 3 and 5: incr. 8 (10) sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing.) (70-80-90 sts.) Change to No. 8 needles and pattern and work even for 5 (6-7) inch.
1st decr. row: Decr. 1 st. in each K4 section across row (64 (73-82) sts. left). Work even in pattern (working only K3 between each pattern) for 5 (5-7) rows.
2nd decr. row: Decr. 1 st. in each K3 section across row (58 (66-74) sts. left). Work even in pattern (working only K2 between each pattern) for 5 (5-7) rows.
3rd decr. row: Decr. 1 st. in each K2 section across row (52 (59-66) sts. left). Work even in pattern (working only K1 between each pattern) for 5 (5-5) rows.
Change to stock, st. and decr. 1 st. at each end of row (For size 3: decr. 4 sts. at even intervals across row. For size 5: decr. 1 st. at beg. of row.) (50 (55-65) sts. left). Decr. 5 sts. (all sizes) at even intervals every 6th row 3 times (35 (40-50) sts.), every 4th row 4 (5-6) times (15 (15-20) sts. left). Break yarn leaving a 15 inch end. Thread a tapestry needle with this end and pull through rem. sts. Fasten off tightly on wrong side.

FINISHING:
Sew up back seam. Turn back cuff. Make a pompon and sew to top of hat. With No. 6 crochet hook and double yarn make 2 chains each 8 (9-10) inch. long for ties. Sew one to each side of hat on inside of cuff. Block to size.
