BLOUSE
Back. Starting at bottom of waistband, with No. 1 needles cast on 126 sts, and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches. Change to No. 3 needles and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K 3, * thread over, k 2 together, k 1. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: P 3, * thread over, p 2 together, p 1. Repeat from * across. These 2 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 2 rows alternately until work measures 10 inches from top of waistband.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 9 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 96 sts remain. Work in pattern straight until work measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then to shape shoulders, bind off 6 sts at beginning of every row until 36 sts remain. Place these sts on a stitch holder to be worked later for neck band.
Front. Starting at bottom of waistband, with No. 1 needles, cast on 138 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches. Change to No. 3 needles and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: Work in pattern as for back across first 56 sts, then k 26 (for center panel), k 2 more, * thread over, k 2 together, k 1. Repeat from * across remaining sts. 2nd row: Work in pattern across first 56 sts, then p next 26 sts, p 2 more, thread over, p 2 together and continue in pattern across remaining sts. These 2 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 2 rows alternately until work measures 6 inches from top of waistband. On next row, with right side of work toward you, work in pattern across first 56 sts, then k 13, turn (thus starting center front opening). Continue to work over these 69 sts in pattern, keeping the 13 sts of center front panel in stockinette st, until underarm measures same as underarm of back. Then, starting at underarm side, shape armhole of back, keeping center front edge straight, until 54 sts remain. Hereafter work in pattern straight until center front opening measures 5 inches. Then at center front edge, cast on 13 sts (thus starting a facing for center front panel). Work straight for 2 inches, keeping the extra sts of center front panel in stockinette st. On next row, starting at armhole edge, work in pattern across first 38 sts, then k 29, cast on 3 sts (thus starting rever facing). Following row: P 32, and work in pattern across. Repeat these 2 rows once more but not casting on any sts. Next row: Work in pattern across first 35 sts, then k 35, cast on 3 sts.
Following row: P 38, and work in pattern across. Repeat these last 2 rows once more but not casting on any sts. Continue in this manner changing 3 sts of lace pattern to stockinette st, and casting on 3 sts at end of every 4th row (at neck edge), until there are 56 sts in stockinette st. At the same time when armhole measures same as armhole of back, shape shoulder as for back (52 sts remain). Then, starting at neck edge, bind off first 24 sts and place remaining 28 sts on stitch holder later to be worked for neck band. This completes left side of front. To complete right side, attach thread to base of front opening and work as for left side, reversing armhole and rever shapings. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams.
Neck Band. Transfer all stitches from stitch holder on to No. 1 needles (92 sts in all) and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches. Bind off very loosely. Fold neck band over on wrong side, and sew in position. Fold the facing of rever over on wrong side, and sew in place.
Sleeves. Starting at bottom of band, with No. 1 needles cast on 96 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1 inch. Change to No. 3 needles and work in pattern as for back for 2 inches. Then, to shape top of sleeve, bind off 9 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then bind off 3 sts at beginning of every 4th and 5th rows until 24 sts remain. Bind off. Sew sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. With crochet hook, attach color to base of front opening and work a row of s c along edge of opening, around neck band, and down opposite side of opening, making enough s c so that work lies flat. Fasten and break off.
Edging. 1st row: With color ch 7, s c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each of next 5 ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 s c in 2nd s c, s c in each of next 3 s c. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Skip first s c, s c in each of next 4 s c. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: 2 s c in 2nd s c, s c in next s c. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: Skip first s c, s c in each of next 2 s c. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: 2 s c in first s c (1 scallop made). Ch 6, turn. 7th row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each of next 4 ch, s c in each of next 2 s c. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter repeat from 2nd to 7th rows incl., until edging is long enough to go around neck band and both sides of opening. Break off. Sew straight edge in position along both sides of opening, and across back of neck as in illustration. To shorten front opening, sew two edgings together at base of opening for about 4 inches.
SKIRT
Entire skirt is worked in stockinette st (k around). Starting at bottom, on circular needle cast on 450 sts. K around until work measures 10 inches. * On next rnd, decrease 9 sts, at equal distances apart. Work straight for 1 inch. Repeat from * until 342 sts remain. Work straight until work measures 24 inches. Then decrease 9 sts on next rnd and every inch thereafter until 288 sts remain. Work straight until skirt measures 31 inches. Bind off. Work 3 rows of s c around bottom of skirt. Then, attach thread to top of skirt and work a row of s c around, then * ch 5, sl st in 8th row on wrong side and 4 sts to left. Ch 5, sl st in 8th st from last st at top edge, repeat from * thus forming V's for elastic casing. Run elastic through casing.
