MATERIALS: Beehive Scotch Fingering Yarn, Patonised Shrink-resist Finish, 3 Ply (1 oz. skeins) of Seatone: Size 12 — 9 Skeins; Sizes 14 and 16 — 10 skeins ... Royal Society Aluminum or Plastic Knitting Needles, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) ... Steel Crochet Hook No. 2 ... 1 spool metallic silver thread ... Pearl beads.

GAUGE: 8½ sts measure 1 inch; 10½ rows measure 1 inch.

Directions are for Size 12. Changes for Sizes 14 and 16 are in parentheses.

BACK ... Starting at lower edge, cast on 130 (136, 142) sts. Work in stockinette st, knit 1 row, purl 1 row, for 1 inch, ending with a purl row. Decrease 10 sts evenly spaced across on next row. Work without decreasing for 1 inch. Decrease 10 sts evenly spaced on next row. There are on needle 110 (116, 122) sts. Work without decreasing until piece meas­ures in all 3 (3¼, 3½) inches, ending with a purl row.

Now work in ribbing for waistband as follows: 1st row: * K 1, slip 2. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2. 2nd row: Purl across. Repeat these 2 rows alternately for 1 inch. Continue in stockinette st as before, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 5th row thereafter until there are on needle 144 (150, 156) sts.

Work without decreasing until piece measures in all 12 (12½, 13) inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off at the beginning of next 2 rows 5 (5, 6) sts. Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of next 4 rows. Decrease 1 st at both ends of each row until there remain 118 (122, 126) sts.

Increase 1 st at both ends of next row and every 5th row thereafter 8 times. Increase 1 st at both ends of every 4th row 6 times. There are on needle 146 (150, 154) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping 7½ (7¾, 8) inches.

To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of next 16 (18, 18) rows. Bind off 12 sts at the beginning of next 4 rows. Bind off remaining 66 (66, 70) sts for back of neck.

FRONT ... Work as for Back until piece measures in all. ending with a purl row, 12 (12½, 13) inches. Bind off at the beginning of next row 5 (5, 6) sts. Knit across next 67 (70, 72) sts. Turn and work over these sts only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge on next row and every other row 23 (23, 25) times, then decrease 1 st at neck edge every 3rd row 10 times

At the Same Time

bind off 2 sts at armhole edge every other row twice.

Decrease 1 st at armhole edge every other row 4 (5, 5) times. Increase 1 st at armhole edge on next row and every 5th row thereafter 8 times. Increase 1 st at armhole edge every 4th row 6 times. When piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge 7½ (7¾, 8) inches, shape shoulder as follows: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of next row and every other row 8 (9, 9) times. Bind off 12 sts at armhole edge every other row twice.

Attach yarn where sts were divided and work opposite side to correspond, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES ... Starting at cuff, cast on 68 (72, 76) sts. Work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of the 7th row and every 4th row thereafter until there are on needle 124 (128, 132) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures 12½ (13, 13½) inches.

To Shape Top: Bind off 5 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of following 2 rows. Decrease 1 st at both ends of each row until 56 sts remain. Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of next t4 rows. Bind off remain­ing 14 sts.

COLLAR — Left Half ... Cast on 20 sts and work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at the beginning of each knit row and decreasing 1 st at end of each knit row, until piece measures at short end 13 (13½, 14) inches. Decrease 1 st at both ends of every other row until 2 sts remain. Bind off.

RIGHT HALF ... Work as for Left Half, reversing shapings.

CUFFS ... Cast on 11 sts and work in stockinette st, casting on 3 sts at the beginning of each purl row until 20 sts are on needle. Work without increasing until piece measures 9 (9¼, 9½) inches. Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of each purl row until 11 sts remain. Bind off.

Block to measurements. Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Make a row of half dc around lower edge of neck, sleeves, collar and cuffs.

With metallic thread make a chain to reach around outer edges of collar, turn and sl st in each ch across. Break off. Make another chain to reach around collar ½ inch in from outer edge, turn and sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4 ch, * ch 3, sc in next 5 ch. Repeat from * across. Break off. Trim cuffs same as for collar, making chain to reach around cuffs. Sew metallic chains around collar and cuffs. Sew on beads as shown in illustration. Sew on collar from center front neck to shoulder and sew remainder of collar down back. Sew side edges of cuffs at lower edge together for 1 inch. Sew on cuffs.
