MATERIALS Fleisher's Melbourne Zephyr; or Bear Brand or Bucilla Angel Zephyr; 4 skeins.
Fleisher's or Bucilla 14-inch White Knitting Needles, 1 pair each, Sizes 4 and 8.
6 Star Buttons ¾ inch diameter.
50 inches Grosgrain Ribbon 1 inch wide.
IMPORTANT Check your gauge first. These directions apply only when Fleisher's, Bear Brand or Bucilla Yarns are used as recommended.
GAUGE: 11 sts = 2 ins. 7 rows = 1 in.
MEASUREMENTS FOR FINISHED GARMENT
Width across back at underarm 18 ins. Width across back at shoulders 15 ins. Width of each front at underarm 9 ½ ins. Length from lower edge to back neck edge 24 ins. Sleeves-Width below underarm 13 ins. Length from lower edge to underarm 20 ins.
BACK-With size 4 needles, cast on 98 sts for lower edge.
Ribbing-First row (right side)-K 2, * p 2, k 2, repeat from * across row.
2nd row-P 2, * k 2, p 2, repeat from * across row. Work ribbing for 2 ins., ending on wrong side. Change to size 8 needles and work stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until 16 ins. from lower edge, ending with a k row.
ARMHOLES-P 8 sts and slip on holder for underarm, p 82 sts, slip last 8 sts on holder for other underarm. Work even until 7 ins. above underarm. Break yarn. Slip 27 sts at each side of back on separate strands of yarn for shoulders and 28 sts in center on strand of yarn for neck ribbing.
LEFT FRONT-With size 4 needles, cast on 52 sts. Work ribbing of p 2, k 2 for 2 ins. Change to size 8 needles and work in stockinette st until same length as back to underarm, ending with a k row at front edge.
ARMHOLE AND NECK SHAPING-P 44 sts, slip last 8 sts on holder for underarm. Work even until 7 ins. above underarm, ending with a p row at armhole edge. K 29, slip last 15 sts on holder for neck ribbing. P 1 row.
Next row-K to within 3 sts of end, k 2 tog, k 1. Repeat last 2 rows once. Change to size 4 needles and work even until 8 ½ ins. above underarm. Break yarn, leaving a 24 in. end for weaving. Weave these sts to left shoulder sts of back.
RIGHT FRONT-With size 4 needles, cast on 52 sts. Work ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2 ins.
Change to size 8 needles and work stockinette st for 1 ½ ins., ending with a p row at front edge.
BUTTONHOLE ROW-K 2, bind off 3 sts, k across row. On next row, cast on 3 sts over bound-off sts. Work to correspond to left front up to neck shaping, ending at front edge; repeating buttonhole every 4 ins. 4 times (about 26 rows between buttonholes and 23 rows above top buttonhole) and shaping armhole at beginning of a p row.
NECK SHAPING-K 15 sts and slip on holder, k 29. P 1 row.
Next row-K 1, slip, k and pass, k across row. Finish to correspond to left front.
RIGHT SLEEVE-Slip 8 sts at right side of back from holder onto size 8 needle and k these sts; pick up and k 56 sts on armhole edge to front underarm (about 1 st in every 2nd row); slip 8 sts from holder and k (72 sts). Work stockinette st (p 1 row, k 1 row) for 7 rows.
Next row-K 1, slip, k and pass, k to within 3 sts of end of row, k 2 tog, k 1 (70 sts). Repeat decreases in this way every 8th row 13 times (44 sts). Work even until 17 ins. from armhole.
Change to size 4 needles. Work ribbing of k 2, P 2 for 3 ins. for cuff. Bind off. Work left sleeve to correspond.
NECK RIBBING-Slip 15 sts of right neck edge to size 4 needle and k; pick up and k 10 sts on side neck edge, k 28 sts of back neck edge; pick up and k 10 sts on side neck edge, k 15 sts of left neck edge (78 sts). Work ribbing of p 2, k 2 for 9 rows, working a buttonhole in the 4th row. Bind off.
FINISHING-Sew seams. Steam.
Cut ribbon into two 25 in. pieces. Turn ends under and sew to right side of each front from neck to lower edge (finished length 24 ins.). Cut buttonholes in ribbon over buttonholes of cardigan and work in buttonhole st with silk buttonhole twist. Sew buttons on left front.
