Cardigan Sweater Pattern No. 450

These directions are for size 12. Changes for sizes 14 and 16 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS
BERNAT Nylo Germantown (2 oz. skeins) — 7(8-9)
1 pair each straight knitting needles No. 6 and 10 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 d p needle or cable holder
8 buttons
1½ yds ¾ inch grosgrain ribbon

GAUGE: 9 sts =2 inches; 6 rows = 1 inch

CABLE PATTERN STITCH: To be worked on each group of 15 sts as designated.
Row 1: P 3, K 3, P 3, K 3, P 3.
Row 2 and all even rows: K 3, P 3, K 3, P 3, K 3.
Row 3: P 3, sl next 6 sts onto d p needle and hold in back of work, K 3, then P 3 and K 3 from d p needle (cable twist), P 3.
Rows 5, 7, 9 and 11: Repeat Row 1.
Row 12: Repeat Row 2.
Repeat these 12 rows for cable pattern stitch.

BACK: Using No. 6 needles, cast on 80(84-88) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2½ inches, inc 1 st at end of last row. Change to No. 10 needles and work as follows: Work 9(11-13) sts in seed st, * put a marker on needle, work Row 1 of cable pattern st on the next 15 sts, put a marker on needle, work 9 sts in seed st, repeat from * once more, put a marker on needle, work Row 1 of cable pattern st on the next 15 sts, put a marker on needle, work 9(11-13) sts in seed st. Con­tinue to work each group of 15 sts between markers in cable pattern st and remaining sts in seed st until piece meas­ures 15(15-15½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5 sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 4(5-6) times. Work even on 63(65-67) sts until armholes measure 7½(7¾-8) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 4(4-2) rows bind off 7 sts. At the beg of each of the next 2(2-4) rows bind off 7(8-8) sts. Sl remaining 21 sts onto a holder.

LEFT FRONT: Using No. 6 needles, cast on 42(46-48) sts. Row 1: K 1, P 1 in ribbing to last 5 sts, work last 5 sts in seed st (front border). Row 2: Work first 5 sts in seed st, P 1, K 1 in ribbing to end of row. Repeat these 2 rows for 2½ inches, ending with Row 2 and inc 1 st at arm edge on last row on SIZES 12 AND 16 ONLY. Change to No. 10 needles and work as follows: Work 9(11-13) sts in seed st, put a marker on needle, work Row 1 of cable pattern st on the next 15 sts, put a marker on needle, work last 19(20-21) sts in seed st. Continue to work cable pattern st on the 15 sts between markers and remaining sts in seed st until piece measures 15(15-15½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 5 sts. At same edge dec 1 st every other row 4(5-6) times. Work even on 34(36-38) sts until armhole measures 5(5¼-5½) inches, ending with a wrong side row. SHAPE NECK: On next row work to last 8(9-10) sts and place these 8(9-10) sts on a holder. At neck edge dec 1 st every other row 5 times. Work even on 21(22-23) sts until armhole measures 7½(7¾-8) inches. SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 7 sts 2(2-1) times and 7(8-8) sts 1(1-2) times.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front, reversing pattern and all shaping and forming first buttonhole when piece measures 1 inch. BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, work 2 sts, bind off the next 2 sts, work to end of row. On next row cast on 2 sts over those bound off previous row. Make 7 more buttonholes, evenly spaced — the last one to be made in neckband.

SLEEVES: Using No. 6 needles, cast on 44(46-46) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 3 inches, inc 1 st at end of last row. Change to No. 10 needles and work as follows: Work 15(16-16) sts in seed st, put a marker on needle, work Row 1 of cable pattern st on the next 15 sts, put a marker on needle, work last 15(16-16) sts in seed st. Continuing to work the 15 sts between markers in cable pattern st and remaining sts in seed st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 2 inches 6(6-7) times. Work even on 57(59-61) sts until piece measures 18(18-18½) inches. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5 sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row until cap measures 4½(4¾-5) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 2 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

FINISHING: Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. NECKBAND: Using No. 6 needles, with right side facing you, pick up 75(79-83) sts around neck, including sts from holders. Keeping 5 sts at each front edge in seed st, P 1, K 1 in ribbing on remaining sts for ½ inch. On the next row on right front form a buttonhole in same manner as before. Continue in ribbing until neckband measures 1¼ inches. Bind off in ribbing. Block. Face front borders and back of neck with ribbon. Sew on buttons.
