Headsize 21½
Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball of main color and 1 ball each of 2 contrasting colors.
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size).
Gauge: 15 sts make 1 inch; 12 rows make 1 inch. Hat is made of 3 bands—1 back band and 2 front bands. These are worked entirely in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row).
Back Band. Starting at bottom with main color, cast on 100 sts and work 4 rows. * Drop main color, attach second color and work 6 rows. Break off. Pick up main color and work 8 rows. Drop main color, attach third color and work 4 rows. Break off. Pick up main color and work 8 rows. Repeat from * until work measures 6 inches in all. Bind off. Double this piece and sew together lengthwise.
Front Bands. Starting at bottom of one band, with main color, cast on 60 sts. Work same as for back band. When work measures 6 inches in all, bind off. Make another band same as this. Sew each of these 2 bands together, same as back band. Then, sew one end of each of 2 front bands to one end of back band. Twist back band three times and twist one front band three times in same direction. Sew end of twisted front band to free end of back band. Twist the other front band in same manner and sew to back band (thus forming hat).
Tabs: With main color, cast on 10 sts and work for 4 inches. Bind off. Make another piece same as this. Sew tabs over seams of bands, as in illustration.
