SIZES
10 to 11 ½ (length, 11 ½ inches).
MATERIALS
Three-ply fingering yarn: 3 ounces gray; 1 ounce each black and white.
Knitting needles: 1 pair No. 1; 1 set (4) double-pointed needles, No. 1.
GAUGE
9 stitches = 1 inch.
With gray yarn and single-pointed needles, cast on 80 stitches. Work in ribbing of knit 1, purl 1 for 3 inches. Wind seven 15 inch lengths of white. Carrying gray and black, work in pattern as follows: 1st row: Attach a short length of white, knit 3 white, * knit 9 gray, attach another short length of white, knit 4 white. Repeat from * to within last 12 stitches, knit 9 gray, attach another short length of white, knit 3 white. 2nd row: Purl 3 white, * purl 9 gray, purl 4 white. Repeat from * to within last 12 stitches, purl 9 gray, purl 3 white. Repeat last 2 rows once more. 5th row: Knit 3 gray, * (knit 1 black, knit 1 gray) 4 times; knit 1 black, knit 4 gray. Repeat from * across, ending with (knit 1 black, knit 1 gray) 4 times; knit 1 black, knit 3 gray. 6th row: Purl 3 gray, * (purl 1 black, purl 1 gray) 4 times; purl 1 black, purl 4 gray. Repeat from * across, ending with (purl 1 black, purl 1 gray) 4 times; purl 1 black, purl 3 gray. Repeat last 2 rows 4 times more. Repeat last 14 rows 3 times more, then first 4 rows once. Break off gray. Next row: Slip first 20 stitches on a stitch holder, rejoin gray and black and work in pattern across next 40 stitches, turn. Slip remaining 20 stitches on another stitch holder.
INSTEP
Continue in pattern on center 40 stitches for 55 rows more. Break off yarns and slip stitches on a stitch holder.
