Chadwick's Red Heart Sock and Sweater Yarn, 3 Ply, Art. E.255, Shrink and Stretch Resist, 7 skeins (1 oz. pull-out skeins) of Black and 1 skein each of Dark Red, Scarlet, and Yellow for Sizes 12 and 14; 8 skeins of Black and 2 skeins each of Dark Red, Scarlet, and Yellow for Size 16.
Milwards “Phantom” Aluminum Knitting Pins or Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
Milwards “Phantom” Aluminum Double-pointed Sock Needles, or Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Double-pointed Sock Needles, 1 set No. 1 (2½ mm. size).
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2.

GAUGE:
Pattern st—8 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.
Stockinette st—7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

Change to No. 3 knitting pins and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures in all	11½”	12”	12½”
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 7 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at end of each row until there remain	87 sts	93 sts	97 sts
Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping	7”	7½”	8”
To Shape Shoulders: Bind off	9 sts	7 sts	10 sts
at the beginning of next 6 rows. On Size 14 only, bind off 8 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows, place on a stitch holder to be worked later for back of neck the remaining	33 sts	35 sts	37 sts
FRONT … Starting at lower edge with Black and No. 1 knitting pins, cast on	128 sts	136 sts	144 sts
Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for	3”	3”	3½”
decreasing 1 st on last row. Break off.
NOTE: Vertical stripes are omitted on chart, to be worked later. When carrying unused color across, twist it around the other every other st, being careful not to pull yarn up too tightly.
Change to No. 3 knitting pins and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: Attach a ball of Dk. Red, knit	—	1 st	5 sts

To complete row, omit center st and follow chart back to beginning, working knit and purl sts as established. Continue to follow chart until top of chart is reached. To Shape Armholes: Bind off 8 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Keeping continuity of pattern dec 1 st at end of each row until there remain	99 sts	105 sts	111 sts
Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending with the wrong side facing	4¾”	5¼”	5½”
To Shape Neck: Work across	60 sts	64 sts	68 sts
place the last	21 sts	23 sts	25 sts
just worked onto a stitch holder to be worked later. Work over the last	39 sts	41 sts	43 sts
only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every other row, until there remain	32 sts	34 sts	36 sts
Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge	7”	7½”	8”
To Shape Shoulder: Bind off	8 sts	8 sts	9 sts
at the beginning of next row and every other row	4 times	3 times	4 times
On Size 14 only: Work one more row. Bind off 10 sts.
Attach yarn where sts were divided and work other side to correspond, reversing shapings.
SLEEVES … Starting at lower edge with Black and No. 1 knitting pins, cast on	58 sts	62 ts	62 sts
1st row: K 2, * p 2, k 2. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: P 2, * k 2, p 2. Repeat from * across. Repeat these 2 rows alternately until piece measures 3 inches. Change to No. 3 knitting pins and continue in rib pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 7th row thereafter until there are on needle	90 sts	94 sts	98 sts
Work without increasing until piece measures in all	17”	17½”	18”
To Shape Top: Bind off 7 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at end of each row until 36 sts remain. Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of each row until 20 sts remain. Bind off. Sew shoulder seams.
NECKBAND … With right side facing, Black and double-pointed needles, pick up and knit around entire neck edge, including sts on stitch holder	100 sts	104 sts	108 sts
Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1 inch. Bind off loosely in ribbing.
VERTICAL STRIPES … With crochet hook, 2 strands of yarn and using colors indicated by arrows on chart, make a row of chain st in each of the purled rib sts.
Block to measurements. Sew up side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Darn in ends securely on wrong side.
