MATERIALS: Bear Brand or Fleisher’s Twin-Pak Win-Knit; or Bear Brand or Fleisher’s Twin-Pak Knitting Worsted, Dark Color A, 2 ozs.; Light Color B, 2 ozs.

“Boye” Needles, 1 pair Size 5.

GAUGE: 6 sts = 1 inch

LEFT MITTEN—With A, cast on 48 sts. Work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 5 rows A, 4 rows B, 2 rows A, 2 rows B, 2 rows A, 2 rows B, 2 rows A, 4 rows B, 4 rows A, increasing 1 st in last row; 49 sts.

Pattern—Always carry yarn not in use loosely on wrong side of work, catching yarn when carried for more than 2 sts.

Row 1—right side—K 1 B, 1 A, 2 B, 4 A, 1 B, 3 A, 1 B, 3 A, 1 B, 4 A, 2 B, 1 A, 1 B, 1 A, 2 B, 4 A, 1 B, 3 A, 1 B, 3 A, 1 B, 4 A, 2 B, 1 A, 1 B.

Row 2—P 1 A, 2 B, 5 A, 2 B, 5 A, 2 B, 5 A, 2 B, 1 A, 2 B, 5 A, 2 B, 5 A, 2 B, 5 A, 2 B, 1 A.

Continue pat., following chart for 15 more rows.

Row 18—Following chart, work 26 sts; break B, place next 10 sts on holder for thumb, with A cast on 10 sts, join B, and work last 13 sts in pat.

Continue pat. until there are 47 pat. rows.

Next row—wrong side—Bind off 2 sts as to p, work pat. until there are 21 sts on right hand needle, hold these 21 sts on back of needle for one half of mitten; bind off next 3 sts, work pat. to within 2 sts of end, bind off last 2 sts as to p. Turn, continue pat. on one half of mitten, decreasing 1 st each side every row 4 times. Bind off remaining 13 sts. Finish other half to correspond.

Thumb—Slip the 10 sts from holder to needle, join A in last st; cast on 10 sts to same needle; 20 sts.

Row 1—wrong side—* P 1 A, 1 B; repeat from * to end.

Row 2—* K 1 A, 1 B; repeat from * to end.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until 2½ ins. from cast-on sts. Break off B. With A, work 2 sts tog. continuously across row; 10 sts. Work 1 row even. Work 2 sts tog. continuously across row; 5 sts. Break off leaving an end. Draw end through 5 sts; fasten off. Sew thumb seam. Sew cast-on sts of thumb to hand.

RIGHT MITTEN—Work same as left mitten until 17 pat. rows above cuff.

Row 18—Following chart work 13 sts, place next 10 sts on holder for thumb, cast on 10 sts, work last 26 sts in pat.

Finish hand to correspond to left mitten.

Thumb—With A, cast on 10 sts, break yarn; slip 10 sts from holder to same needle; 20 sts. Join A in first st, work rows 1 and 2 as on other thumb and finish to correspond.

FINISHING—Sew side seam; weave tops tog. Steam.
