This free pattern originally published by The American Thread Company as New and Old Afghans, Star Book No. 112.
Approximate Size: 52 inches by 70 inches without fringe
Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "DAWN" KNITTING WORSTED or "DAWN" NYLON of Knitting Worsted Size
22 ozs. Lt. Gray.
32 ozs. National Blue.
15 ozs. Scarlet.
1 pr. knitting needles No. 6.
Plastic crochet hook No. 5 or G.
WIDE STRIP: With Blue cast on 70 sts and work in pattern as follows:
Rows 1 and 3. K 5, p 60, k 5.
Row 2. P 5, k 60, p 5.
Row 4. P 5, * k 4, sl next 4 sts on double pointed needle and place in front of work, k next 4 sts, then k 4 sts from double pointed needle, repeat from * 4 times more, p 5.
Rows 5 and 7. K 5, p 60, k 5.
Row 6. P 5, k 60, p 5.
Row 8. P 5, * sl next 4 sts on double pointed needle and place in back of work, k next 4 sts, then k 4 sts from double pointed needle, k 4, repeat from * 4 times more, p 5. Repeat these 8 rows until strip measures 70" from the beginning, bind off. Join yarn at corner and working across short end, work 1 s c in each st, making a plait of cable sts and work 2 s c through plait to hold in shape, work 3 s c in each corner and 1 s c in every other st on long side. Work other short end and side in same manner, join in first s c.
Next Row. Ch 1, 1 s c in each s c, 3 s c in center st at each corner, join, cut yarn. Work 1 more strip in Blue and 1 strip in Scarlet.
NARROW STRIP: With Lt. Gray, cast on 46 sts and work in pattern as follows:
Rows 1 and 3. K 11, p 24, k 11.
Row 2. P 11, k 24, p 11.
Row 4. P 11, * k 4, sl next 4 sts on double pointed needle and place in front of work, k next 4 sts, then k 4 sts from double pointed needle, repeat from * once, p 11.
Rows 5 and 7. K 11, p 24, k 11.
Row 6. P 11, k 24, p 11.
Row 8. P 11, * sl next 4 sts on double pointed needle and place in back of work, k next 4 sts, then k 4 sts from double pointed needle, k 4, repeat from * once, p 11. Repeat these 8 rows until strip measures 70" from the beginning. Finish same as wide strip. Work 1 more strip in Lt. Gray. Sew strips together on wrong side picking up both loops on each strip alternating colors having the Blue strip on outer edge and Scarlet strip in center with a Lt. Gray strip on each side.
FRINGE: Cut strands 8" long. Using 2 strands, double in half and loop through every other scan short ends, draw ends through loop tightly, having the colors to correspond to strip.
