MATERIALS: BOTANY KWILTEE, 1-2-oz. skein.
KNITTING NEEDLES: 1 pair "Boye" Non-Inflammable Needles, Size 10 ½ - OR SIZE YOU REQUIRE TO KNIT TO GAUGE GIVEN BELOW.
GAUGE: 9 sts = 2 inches 5 rows = 1 inch
Cast on 3 sts. Work even in garter st - k all rows - until 12 ins. from beg. for tie string.
Next Row - Inc. 1 st in each of first 2 sts, k 1. K 1 row.
Inc. row - Inc. 1 st in first st, k to within 2 sts of end, inc. 1 st in next st, k 1; 7 sts.
Pattern - Row 1 - wrong side - K 2, p 3, k 2.
Row 2 - K 1, p 1, k 3, p 1, k 1.
Row 3 - K 1, inc. 1 st in next st, p 2, inc. 1 st in next st as to p, k 2; 9 sts.
Row 4 - K 1, p 1, k 5, p 1, k 1.
Row 5 - K 2, inc. 1 st in next st, p 2, inc. 1 st in next st as to p, p 1, k 2; 11 sts.
Row 6 - * K 1, p 1; repeat from * once, k 3, † p 1, k 1; repeat from † once.
Row 7 - K 2, p 1, inc. 1 st in next st as to k, p 2, inc. 1 st in next st as to p, k 1, p 1, k 2; 13 sts.
Row 8 - * K 1, p 1; repeat from * once, k 5, † p 1, k 1; repeat from † once.
Row 9 - K 2, p 1, k 1, inc. 1 st in next st as to p, p 2, place a marker on needle, inc. 1 st in next st as to p, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 2; 15 sts. Carry up marker.
Row 10 - Work k 1, p 1 ribbing to within 1 st of marker, k 3, continue p 1, k 1 ribbing to end.
Row 11 - K 2, work p 1, k 1 ribbing to within 3 sts of marker, inc. 1 st in next st as to k, p 2, slip marker, inc. 1 st in next st as to p, k 1, p 1 ribbing to within 2 sts of end, k 2; 17 sts.
Row 12 - K 1, p 1 ribbing to within 2 sts of marker, k 5, work p 1, k 1 ribbing to end.
Row 13 - K 2, work p 1, k 1 ribbing to within 3 sts of marker, inc. 1 st in next st as to p, p 2, slip marker, inc. 1 st in next st as to p, work p 1, k 1 ribbing across, end with k 2 instead of k 1; 19 sts.
Repeat last 4 rows until there are 39 sts on needle. Work even in pat. for 12 rows, end on wrong side. Piece should measure about 9½ ins.
First dec. row - right side - K 1, p 1 ribbing to within 3 sts of marker, slip 1, p 1, pass slipped st over pst, k 3, k 2 tog., work p 1, k 1 ribbing to end; 37 sts.
Next row - K 2, work p 1, k 1 ribbing to within 3 sts of marker, p 5, continue k 1, p 1 ribbing across, end with k 2.
2nd dec. row - K 1, p 1 ribbing to within 3 sts of marker, p 2 tog., k 3, p 2 tog., work k 1, p 1 ribbing to end.
Next row - K 2, work p 1, k 1 ribbing to within 2 sts of marker, p 3, continue k 1, p 1 ribbing across, end k 2. Repeat last 4 rows until 9 sts remain.
Next row - K 2, p 5, k 2.
On following row, k 1, p 2 tog., k 3, p 2 tog., k 1; 7 sts.
K 1 row, decreasing 1 st each side; 5 sts.
K 1 row even.
K 1 row, decreasing 1 st each side; 3 sts.
Work even in garter st on these 3 sts until tie string is same length as first tie string. Finish all ends neatly. Steam lightly.
