Materials: 5 Skeins KENTUCKY ALL PURPOSE YARN—1 Pair Number 8—10" Knitting Needles—1 Set Number 3 Sock Needles.
Gauge: 5 sts = 1 inch; 5 rows = 1 inch.
Back of Sweater—Size 34.
Band: Cast on 68 sts. Purl back. K 2, P 2, across the row. K 2, P 2, across the row. Continue this until the band measures 3". Now add 10 sts evenly across the row, giving you 78 sts. Purl back.
Pattern: The center 46 sts constitute the pattern. Row 1—K 16, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 8, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 8, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 16. Row 2—P 16, K 2, P 6, K 2, P 8, K 2, P 6, K 2, P 8, K 2, P 6, K 2, P 16. Row 3—Repeat Row 1. Row 4—Repeat Row 2. Row 5—Repeat Row 1. Row 6—Repeat Row 2. Row 7—K 16, P 2 (This is the row on which the cable is made.) With a sock needle remove the 1st 3 sts and hold in back of work until the next 3 sts have been knitted. Now knit the 3 sts you are holding on the sock needle. Proceed with the pattern as follows: P 2, K 8, P 2, and again remove the next 3 sts onto the sock needle, and knit the next 3 sts. Then knit the 3 sts held on the sock needle, and proceed again with the pattern until you have knitted the last 16 sts. Row 8—Repeat Row 2. Row 9—Repeat Row 1. Row 10—Repeat Row 2. Row 11—Repeat Row 1. Row 12—Repeat Row 2. Row 13—Repeat Row 1. Row 14—Repeat Row 2. Row 15—This is the row on which the cable is made, so repeat Row 7. Repeat this procedure until you have completed 8 cables.
Armhole: Cast off 6 sts on each side for armhole as follows: On knit row cast off 6 sts and continue the pattern to the end of row. On purl row cast off 6 sts and continue pattern to end of row. Then knit 2 tog on the knit row at beginning and end of row. Repeat this procedure in the next knit row. You have 8 sts less on each armhole side, or 62 sts, left on the row. Now continue the pattern on these remaining 62 st until you have completed 6½ cables. You are now ready to bind off for the shoulders.
Shoulder: Bind off 4 sts on the next knit row and continue the pattern to end of row. Then bind off 4 sts at the beginning of the following Purl row, and complete the pattern to end of row. Continue this procedure, binding off only 4 sts at a time until you have bound off 16 sts on each shoulder side. This will leave 30 sts for the neck. After binding off the last 4 sts for the shoulder, complete the row, and bind off on knit side. This completes the back of the sweater.
Front of Sweater
Band: Cast on 68 sts. Purl back. K 2, P 2, across the row. K 2, P 2, across the row. Continue this until the band measures the same as the band for the back of the sweater. Now add 10 sts evenly across the row, which again gives you 78 sts. Purl back.
Pattern: The center 46 sts will constitute the pattern. Make front exactly as you did the back, up to 2" above the armhole. At this point you will have 62 sts on your needle. Divide these sts in half to start your V neck. K 31 sts and place them on holder. On the remaining 31 sts continue the pattern except that on the V neck side you knit 2 sts tog on every knit row until you have 16 sts left, then continue the pattern on the 16 sts until the armhole measures the same length as the back. Now bind off for the shoulders the same as you did on the back. Now in the center tie on another ball of yarn and continue the pattern in the same manner by knitting the first 2 sts tog on the V neck edge. When this side measures the same length as the other, bind off for the shoulder from the armhole side. Now match the shoulders of the front piece to the shoulders of the back piece and sew them together on the wrong side with a back stitch.
Armhole: With a crochet hook, on the right side of the knitting, pick up from 80 to 85 sts. Pick up these sts 4 or 5 at a time and slip them onto your knitting needle, until you have picked up all the sts. Now knit a row, and purl a row, very loosely, for six rows, then bind off very loosely. Make it fit around the edge flat on the body of the sweater, and sew it loosely with the yarn. Follow the same procedure for second armhole. Now sew together the sides of the sweater on the wrong side. You are now ready for the neck.
Neck: Start at the center of the V and pick up 40 sts on the side, picking up the sts with a crochet hook and placing them on a Number 3 sock needle. In the same manner pick up the 30 sts on the back of the neck, placing them on a second sock needle. Then pick up 40 sts on the other side of the V, placing these sts on the 3rd sock needle. Now K 1, P 1, around to the other point of the neck. Then turn, keeping the knit st over a knit st and a purl st over a purl st until you have reached the point of the V. Repeat this procedure for 1 inch, being careful not to form a circle. At the point of the V this leaves the two ends open. These ends must be lapped and sewn to form a perfect miter.
