MATERIAL:
3 balls Sockyarn 3 ply (1 oz. ball) for small & medium sizes
4 balls Sockyarn 3 ply (1 oz. ball) for large size
1 set bone sock needles No. 1 and No. 2
Elastic for Cuff
GAUGE: 8½ sts. = 1 inch
For all sizes cast on 72 sts. on No. 1 needles. Join and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2½ inches. Fold the cuff in half and work next round double, (this means knitting the sts. on needle tog. with the sts. on cast on row). Work to within 3 sts. of end of round, then work single sts. only (this is opening for elastic). Change to No. 2 needles and pattern: * K6, P2, K8, P2. Repeat from * across round. Repeat this round 3 times more. Next round: * K6, P2, slip the next 4 sts. to an extra needle and hold in front of work, K the next 4 sts., K the 4 sts. from extra needle (a cable made) P2 repeat from * across round. Continue to work this way cabling the K8 sts, every 8th row until sock measures 11½ inches (12½ inches for medium size or 13½ inches for large size). Divide the sts. for heel. Mark a K6 rib for center back and slip 18 sts. from each side of center on one needle for heel (42 sts). The remaining 30 sts. divide on 2 needles for instep. Work over heel sts. only and decrease at even intervals in next row 14 sts. P back. 1st row: (right side) * slip 1, K1, repeat from * across. 2nd row: P. Repeat these 2 rows until 24 rows altogether. Now turn heel right side facing you. Slip 1, K14, K2 tog., K1, turn. Slip 1, P3, P2 tog., P1, turn, slip 1, K4, K2 tog., K1, turn, slip 1, P5, P2 tog., P1, turn, slip 1, K6, K2 tog., K1, turn. Continue this way, always working 1 more st. in each row until there are 16 sts. left on needle. K1 row. Pick up and K14 sts. along side of heel with another needle (first needle). Work in pattern across all instep sts. (2nd needle). Pick up and K14 sts. on other side of heel and K8 sts. of heel needle onto same needle (3rd needle). Slip the rem. 8 heel sts. onto 1st needle, ending at center of sole. Now decrease for instep. 1st round: K to within 3 sts. of first needle, K2 tog., K1, work across 2nd needle in pattern, on 3rd needle K1, slip 1, K1 and pull the slipped st. over the K st. K to end. 2nd round: K around. Repeat these 2 rounds until 58 sts. are left in round. Work even, continuing the cable pattern on 2nd needle until piece measures from back of heel 6 inches (for medium size 7 inches, for large size 8 inches). Discontinue cable pattern and decrease 1 st. at each end of 2nd needle (28 sts. left). K3 rounds. Now decrease for toe. 1st round: on first needle K to within 3 sts., K2 tog., K1, on 2nd needle K1, slip 1, K1 and pull the slipped st. over the K st., K to within 3 sts., K2 tog., K1, on 3rd needle K1, slip 1, K1 and pull the slipped st. over the K st. K to end. 2nd round: K around. Repeat these 2 rounds until 16 sts, are left in round. Weave the sts. together.
Pull elastic through hem on cuff.
