Childrens Socks Pattern, No. 601

Sizes 5½ – 6½ – 7½

 

No. 601 – Children's Socks

REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 2-ounces of 3-ply Sock Yarn.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. No. 1 single pointed.
Two stitch holders.

GAUGE: 8½ sts to an inch

STARTING AT THE CUFF: Cast on 48 (52-56) sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches. On the last row decrease to 40 (44-48) sts. Now work in stockinette stitch until the piece mea­sures 4¼ (4¼-5) inches in all, ending with a purl row.

HEEL: (For all sizes) Knit 11 sts, leave on the needle; place next 18 (22-26) sts onto a st holder for the instep; place the re­maining sts onto a 2nd st holder. On the sts that are on the needle, work in stockinette st, always slipping the first st on a purl row for 18 rows, ending with a purl row.

SHAPING OF THE HEEL:
K 2, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 3, turn;
K 3, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 4, turn;
K 4, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 5, turn;
K 5, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; (7 sts).
With the same needle pick up and knit 11 sts along side of heel, knit the sts off instep st holder and place all these sts back onto a free st holder; knit the 11 sts off 2nd st holder. Work on these sts in stockinette st, always slipping the first st on a knit row, for 19 rows; ending with a knit row.

SHAPING 2ND HALF OF HEEL:
P 2, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 3, turn;
P 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 4, turn;
P 4, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 5, turn;
P 5, p 2 tog, p 1, (7 sts).

With the same needle, pick up and purl 11 sts along side of heel, place a marker on the needle, purl 18 (22-26) sts of the instep, place a marker on the needle, purl remaining sts.

GUSSET DECREASES: 1st dec: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1, slip marker, knit across instep sts, slip marker, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. Next row: Purl across keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until you have 40 (44-48) sts on the needle. Drop off markers. Now work in stockinette stitch until the sock measures from the back of heel 4¼ (4¾-5½) inches. With the wrong side of the work facing you, purl 10 (11-12) sts, place a marker on the needle, purl 20 (22-24) sts, place a marker on the needle, purl remaining sts.

TOE DECREASES: 1st dec: Knit to within 3 sts of first mark­er, k 2 tog, k 1, slip marker, k 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, knit to within 3 sts of 2nd marker, k 2 tog, k 1, slip marker, k 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. Next row: Purl across keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until there remain on the needle 16 (16-20) sts. Bind off and sew across toe, having decreases at side. Sew sole and back seams. Make the other sock the same way.

 

No. 600 – Children's Socks

REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 2-ounces of 3-ply Sport Yarn.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. No. 1 single pointed.
Two stitch holders

GAUGE: 8½ sts to an inch

   Following instructions as given for No. 601 working cuff in pattern as follows:

Row 1: * k 2, p 2, repeat from * across row.
Row 2: Repeat row 1.
Row 3: * p 2, k 2, repeat from * across row.
Row 4: Repeat row 3.

Repeat these 4 rows until cuff measures 1¾ inches. Now work in stockinette stitch until piece measures length desired to heel. Complete remainder of sock as given in No. 601. Make other sock the same way.

 

No. 614 – Children’s Striped Socks

REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 1-ounce each of Red and Tan 3-ply Sock Yarn.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #2 single pointed.
Two stitch holders.

GAUGE: 8½ sts to an inch

STARTING AT THE CUFF: Work as per instructions given for No. 601 using red yarn. Then work in the stripe pattern as follows: * 4 rows of tan, 2 rows of red; repeat from * ending with 4 rows of tan at the heel. Change to red yarn and work entire heel including turn; still working with red pick up sts along side of first half of heel, work across to 2nd half of heel and complete this half of heel in red, including picking up sts along side of heel, purl remainder of row. Working in striped pattern follow instructions in No. 601 until you come to the toe. Break off tan yarn. Complete toe in red. Finish sock as in No. 601 pattern. Make the other sock the same way.
