Sizes: 8 to 11

REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: Knitting Worsted (3-oz. for sizes 8 to 9) (4-oz. for sizes 10 to 11).
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #5 single pointed.
Two stitch holders.

GAUGE: 5 sts to an inch

STARTING AT THE CUFF: Cast on 48 sts and work as follows: Row 1: P 1, * k 2, p 2, repeat from * across ending with p 1. Row 2: K 1, * p 2, k 2, repeat from * across ending with k 1. Row 3: P 1, * knit in back of 2nd st on left hand needle but leave it on needle, knit first st on needle and take both sts off, p 2, repeat from * across ending with p 1. Row 4: Repeat row 2. Repeat these 4 rows for 2 inches. Now discontinue the twisted st pattern and work in ribbing until the piece measures 4 inches in all.

HEEL: Knit 12 sts and leave on the needle; place next 24 sts for instep onto a st holder, remaining 12 sts onto a 2nd st holder. Working on the 12 sts, slip 1, p 1, repeat across. Next row: Knit across row. Repeat these last 2 rows for 16 rows, ending with a purl row.

SHAPING OF HEEL:
K 2, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 3, turn;
K 3, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 4, turn;
K 4, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 5, turn;
K 5, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 6, turn;
K 6, slip 1, k 1, psso, no knit 1 (7 sts).
With the same needle pick up and knit 10 sts along side of heel, work the sts of instep onto this needle and place all these sts from needle onto a free st holder; knit 12 sts off st holder. Work­ing on these 12 sts to correspond to first half of heel; work 17 rows, always slipping first st on a knit row ending with a knit row.

SHAPING 2ND HALF OF HEEL:
P 2, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 3, turn;
P 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 4, turn;
P 4, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 5, turn;
P 5, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 6, turn;
P 6, p 2 tog, no purl 1 (7 sts).
With the same needle, pick up and purl 10 sts along side of heel, place a marker on needle; work 24 sts of instep onto needle, place a marker, purl remaining 17 sts.

GUSSET DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker, rib across to 2nd marker; slip marker, k 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. 2nd row: Purl across to marker, slip marker, rib across to 2nd marker, slip marker; purl to end of row. Repeat these last 2 rows until 48 sts remain on needle. Drop off markers. Work without decreasing until piece measures 6-inches for Size 8; 7 inches for Size 9; 8 inches for Size 10; or 2 inches less than desired length. With the wrong side of the work facing you. Purl 12 sts; place a marker; purl 24 sts, place a marker; purl last 12 sts.

TOE DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to within 3 sts of 2nd marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. Next Row: Purl across row keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 8 sts remain. Bind off. Fold so that the decreases come at side. Sew across toe. Sew sole and back seams. Make the other sock the same way.
