Sizes 7½ to 10

REQUIREMENTS
YARN: (M) 3-ounces of Navy Blue Sport Yarn or a 3-ply Sock Yarn. (C) ½-ounce of a contrasting shade.
NEEDLES: 1-pair #1 single-pointed.
Two Stitch Holders.

GAUGE: 8 sts to an inch.

Starting at the cuff and for all sizes with the main color, cast on 60 sts. P 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row. Tie in contrasting color and work the cuff in following pattern:
1st row: K 2 m, * k 2 c, k 4 m, repeat from * across row, ending with k 2 c, k 2 m.
2nd row: P 2 m, * p 2 c, p 4 m, repeat from * across row ending with p 2 c, p 2 m.
3rd row: With the main color, knit across entire row.
4th row: With the main color, purl across entire row.
5th row: Repeat 3rd row.
6th row: Repeat 4th row.
Repeat these 6 rows for 2 inches, ending with the 6th row of the pattern. Fasten off the contrasting color. Knit across next row decreasing to (52 sts–sizes 7½-8) (54 sts–sizes 8½-9) (56 sts–sizes 9½-10). K 1 row, p 1 row, until the sock measures (13½ ins.) (14½ ins.) (15½ ins.).

HEEL: K 13 sts, leave on the needle; place the next (26 sts) (28 sts) (30 sts) for the instep onto a st holder; place the remaining 13 sts onto a 2nd st holder. On the sts that are on the needle, work in stockinette stitch, (always slipping the first st on a purl row), for 24 rows, ending with a purl row.

SHAPING OF HEEL:
K 2, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 3, turn;
k 3, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 4, turn;
k 4, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 5, turn;
k 5, sl 1. k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 6 turn;
k 6, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, (8 sts).
With the same needle, pick up and knit 12 sts along side of heel; knit instep sts off the st holder onto the needle; take all these sts from the needle onto a free st holder. Knit the 13 sts off st holder and work in stockinette stitch, (always slipping the first st on a knit row), for 25 rows; ending with a knit row.

SHAPING 2ND HALF OF HEEL:
P 2, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 3, turn;
p 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 4, turn;
p 4, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 5, turn;
p 5, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 6, turn;
p 6, p 2 tog, p 1, (8 sts).
With the same needle, pick up and purl 12 sts along side of heel; place a marker on the needle; purl the instep sts from st holder, (26 sts) (23 sts) (30 sts); place a marker on the needle; purl remaining sts.

GUSSET DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; knit across instep sts, slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. 2nd row: Purl across keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until (52 sts) (54 sts) (56 sts), remain on needle. Drop off both markers. Now work even in stockinette stitch until the sock measures (6-ins) (7-ins) (8-ins) from the back of the heel, ending with a knit row. Purl (13 sts) (13 sts) (14 sts); place a marker on the needle; purl (26 sts) (28 sts) (28 sts); place a marker on the needle; purl the remaining sts.

TOE DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to within 3 sts of 2nd marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. NEXT ROW: Purl across, keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 12 sts remain on needle. Weave the sts together, or bind off and sew, having the decrease at the sides. Sew sole and back seams. Make the other sock the same way.
