Milward’s Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size).
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5.

3 snap fasteners.

Measurements: Bust—34 inches. Length from top of shoulder—19½ inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—3¾ inches.

Gauge: 8 sts make 1 inch; 12 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 108 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 3 inches, increasing 19 sts at equal distances apart on last row (127 sts). Then work as follows: 1st row: K 2, * O, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o., O, k 1, O, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o., O, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with O, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o., O, k 2. 2nd row: P across. 3rd row: K 1, k 2 tog., * O, k 1, O, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o., O, k 1, O, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o. Repeat from * across, ending row with O, k 1, O, k 2 tog., k 1. 4th row: P across. These 4 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 4 rows, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every inch thereafter until there are 139 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 11 inches in all.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 105 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 5 sts at beginning of each row until 45 sts remain. Bind off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 108 sts and work in ribbing for 3 inches, increasing 18 sts at equal distances apart on last row (126 sts). Then p across 1st 67 sts. Place remaining 59 sts on a stitch holder. Hereafter work over these 67 sts only, as follows: 1st row: (K 1, p 1) 4 times, k 2, * O, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o., O, k 1, O, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o., O, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 2. 2nd row: P across to within the last 8 sts, (k 1, p 1) 4 times. 3rd row: (K 1, p 1) 4 times, k 1, k 2 tog., * O, k 1, O, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o., O, k 1, O, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o. Repeat from * across. 4th row: Repeat 2nd row. Hereafter continue in pattern, keeping the 8 sts at center front in ribbing of k 1, p 1 (this is center front band), and increasing 1 st at underarm edge every 5th row until there are 84 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 12 inches in all.

To Shape Armhole: Starting at underarm edge, bind off 8 sts once, and 3 sts every other row 3 times. Then dec. 1 st every other row until 58 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5¾ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, starting at center front edge, bind off 8 sts (thus starting neck shaping), and continue across. Hereafter, dec. 1 st every row at neck edge until 30 sts remain. Shape shoulder as before until all sts are worked off.

Left Front. Transfer the 59 sts at top of ribbing from stitch holder and, beginning at underarm edge, work in pattern across. Cast on 8 sts. Continue as for Right Front, reversing shapings.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 92 sts and work in ribbing for 1 inch, increasing 15 sts at equal distances apart on last row (107 sts). Then work in pattern until piece measures 3¾ inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 20 sts remain. Bind off.

Collar. Starting at neck edge, cast on 216 sts and work in ribbing for 2 rows. Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 140 sts remain. Bind off.

Buttons. 1st rnd: Starting at center, with Pink ch 2, make 8 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c around. 3rd rnd: * S c in 1st s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. 4th and subsequent rnds: S c in each s c around, increasing where necessary to keep work flat, until piece is large enough to cover button mold. Then work 1 rnd without increasing. Slip mold into this piece. Then work s c in every other s c around until button is completely closed. Fasten and break off.

Sew up underarm seams, easing in the extra fullness of Fronts 1½ inches down from armhole shaping. Sew up shoulder seams. Find center of top of sleeve, and mark with a pin. Measure off 1½ inches on each side of pin, and mark. Then measure off 2 inches on each side of these last 2 pins, and mark. Remove center pin (4 pin-marks in all). Make a ½-inch dart at each pin, taking off ½ inch on each side of pin, and graduating it into nothing 1 inch from top edge. Sew darts on wrong side (thus making 4 darts). Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew collar all around neck edge, having center front bands extend beyond edges of collar. Sew the 8 sts of center front band in place on wrong side. Sew up center front bands to within 5 inches of neck shaping. Sew snap fasteners along front and neck opening. Sew buttons along front band as in illustration.

Trim Bands (Make 6). With Pink, ch 175, turn. S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Break off. Form into scallops down Fronts, as in illustration, and sew to blouse with running stitches.
