Allegro Sweater Pattern

Sizes 14, 16, 18

Instructions are for size 14, changes for sizes 16 and 18 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS—Bear Brand Wonderized De Luxe Sock and Sport Yarn, 6 (6-7) skeins.
Bucilla Plastic Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Sizes 1 and 3.
Bucilla Steel Crochet Hook, Size 4.

MEASUREMENTS OF GARMENT—At bustline 34 (36-38) ins. Width of back at underarm 16½ (17½-18½) ins.
Sleeves—width at underarm 12 (12½-13) ins.

GAUGE: Stockinette St—8 sts = 1 inch; 21 rows = 2 inches
Pattern St for Yoke—9 sts = 1 inch

BACK—With size 1 needles, cast on 100 (108-116) sts. Work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 4 ins.
Inc. row—Continuing ribbing, inc. 18 sts evenly spaced across row; 118 (126-134) sts.
With size 3 needles, work stockinette st—k 1 row, p 1 row—, increasing 1 st each side every 1 in. 7 times; 132 (140-148) sts. Work even until 8½ ins. above ribbing.

Armholes—Bind off 8 (9-10) sts at beg. of next 2 rows for underarm.
Dec. 1 st each side every 2nd row 8 (9-10) times; 100 (104-108) sts, end with p row.

Back Opening—K 50 (52-54) sts, place on holder for right half of back, finish row. Work even on left half until armhole measures 6¾  (7-7¼) ins., straight up from underarm. Bind off.
Beg. at center back, finish right half to correspond.

POCKET LININGS— With size 3 needles, cast on 37 (39-41) sts. K 1 row, p 1 row for 8 rows.
Inc. row—K, increasing 1 st in every 7th st 5 times, finish row; 42 (44-46) sts. Place on holder. Make 2.

YOKE PATTERN—Multiple of 2 plus 1 st.
Row 1—wrong side—* K 1, insert needle in next st, wrap yarn 3 times and k this st—long st; repeat from *, end k 1.
Row 2—P 1, * take yarn to back of work, slip long st from needle as to p, bring yarn to front of work, p 1; repeat from * to end.
Row 3—* K 1, take yarn to front, slip long st as to p, take yarn to back; repeat from *, end k 1.
Row 4— Same as row 2. Repeat these 4 rows for yoke pat.

FRONT—With size 1 needles, cast on 108 (116-124) sts. Work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 4 ins.
Inc. row—Continuing ribbing, inc. 19 sts evenly spaced across row; 127 (135-143) sts.
With size 3 needles, work stockinette st, shaping underarm edges as on back; 141 (149-157) sts. Work even until same length as back to armholes, end with k row.

Armholes and Yoke—Bind off 8 (9-10) sts at beg. of next row for underarm, p until 43 (46-49) sts from bind-off, place a marker before next st, work first row of yoke pat. on next 39 sts, place a marker before next st, p to end. Bind off 8 (9-10) sts for left underarm at beg. of next row, k to first marker, work 2nd row of yoke pat. on next 39 sts, k to end. Carry up markers. Continue in stockinette st with 39 center sts in yoke pat., decreasing 1 st each side every 2nd row 6 (7-8) times; 113 (117-121) sts. Work even until yoke measures about 2 ins., end on wrong side with pat. row 3. Drop markers.

Simulated Pockets—Bind off 37 (39-41) sts at beg. of next row, work pat. on 39 yoke sts, bind off last 37 (39-41) sts. Fasten off. Next row—From wrong side, work first row of yoke pat. on 42 (44-46) sts of pocket lining, on same needle, continue pat. on the 39 center sts and on the 42 (44-46) sts of other pocket lining; 123 (127-131) sts. Work pat. even until armhole measures about 5½ ins., end with pat. row 4.

Neck Shaping—Work 47 (49-51) sts, place on holder for right side, bind off 29 sts tightly, finish row. Work left side, de­creasing 1 st at neck edge every row 10 times; 37 (39-41) sts. Work even until armhole is same length as on back. Bind off. Beg. at neck edge, finish right shoulder to correspond.

SLEEVES—With size 3 needles, cast on 82 (86-90) sts. Work stockinette st, increasing 1 st each side every ½ in. 7 times; 96 (100-104) sts. Work even until 4 ins. from beg. Bind off 8 (9-10) sts at beg. of next 2 rows.

Dec. 1 st each side every 2nd row 8 times; every 4th row 5 (6-7) times; every 2nd row 4 times. Bind off 3 sts at beg. of next 6 rows. Bind off remaining 28 sts.

COLLAR—With size 3 needles, cast on 58 (60-62) sts for outer edge of half of collar. Work stockinette st for 1 in., end with p row. Dec. row—Dec. 8 sts evenly spaced across row. P 1 row, k 1 row. Bind off. Make 2.

FINISHING—Steam. Sew 37 (39-41) sts of front shoulder to 34 (36-38) sts of back shoulder, leaving 16 sts on each half free for neck. Sew seams. Sew in sleeves with seam at center underarm. From right side, work 1 row sc around lower edge of sleeves, outer edges of collar and upper edge of pockets. Work sc around neck edge and back open­ing. Work 2nd row sc on right edge of opening making 4 buttonloops evenly spaced. Sew on collar as illustrated. Sew pocket linings to wrong side. Steam seams. Trim pockets with buttons as illustrated.
