Chadwick's Red Heart Saxony, 10 balls (⅔ oz. balls) of main color and 1 ball of a contrasting color.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 0 (2 mm. size).
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6.
3 small buttons.
4 yds. ribbon, ¼ inch wide.

Gauge: 10 sts make 1 inch; 12 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, with main color cast on 260 sts and work in garter st (k each row) for 6 rows. Then work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 11½ inches in all. With right side of work toward you, * k 2 tog. Repeat from * across (130 sts). Hereafter, continue in garter st for 5 more rows, decreasing 14 sts at equal distances apart on the 2nd row only (116 sts). Next row: With right side of work toward you, k 1, * k 2 tog., O. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1 (116 sts). Work 5 rows of garter st (3 ridges on right side). Hereafter, work in yoke pattern, shaping armholes as follows: 1st row: P 2 tog. (decrease), * k 1, p 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 2 tog. (another decrease). 2nd row: P 2 tog. (decrease), * k 2, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 2 tog. (another decrease). 3rd to 6th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows alternately, knitting 2 sts tog. or purling 2 sts tog., as the case may be, for a dec. 7th row: P 2 tog., * keeping yarn in front (toward you), sl the next 4 sts (that is the k 1, p 2, k 1) onto right-hand needle, pass yarn around these 4 sl sts as if to k, then sl these 4 sts back onto left hand needle, drawing the yarn snugly around these 4 sts. Then k 1, p 2, k 1 (thus 1 group of smocking is made), p 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 2 tog. Thus a row of smocking is worked. 8th row: P 2 tog., * k 2, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 2 tog. 9th row: P 2 tog., * p 1, k 1, p 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 2 tog. 10th row: K 2 tog., * p 1, k 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 2 tog. (96 sts). 11th row: P 1, * k 1, p 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 1. 12th row: K 1, * p 1, k 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 13th row: P 1, k 1, p 2, then repeat from * of 7th row, thus working a row of smocking, ending row with p 2, k 1, p 1. 14th to 18th rows incl: Repeat 12th and 11th rows alternately. The last 12 rows (7th to 18th incl.) constitute the pattern. Hereafter, work in pattern, keeping both edges straight, until piece measures 2¾ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, work in pattern across 1st 48 sts, turn (thus starting back opening). Work straight until piece measures 4 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 10 sts every other row 3 times. Bind off remaining sts for back of neck. Break off. Attach yarn at base of opening and work opposite side to correspond.

Front. Work exactly as for Back up to armhole shaping. Then shape armholes as before and work straight until piece measures 3¾ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping (96 sts). On next row, work in pattern across 1st 41 sts, bind off 14 sts (thus starting neck shaping), continue in pattern across. Hereafter, work in pattern over these last 41 sts only, binding off 2 sts at neck edge every other row 4 times, and decreasing 1 st at neck edge 3 more times; at the same time, when armhole measures same as armhole of Back, shape shoulder by binding off 5 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are worked off. Break off. Attach yarn at opposite side of neck edge and work to correspond. Sleeves. Starting at bottom, with main color cast on 70 sts and work in garter st for 6 rows. Next row: K 1, * k 2 tog., O. Repeat from * across, ending row with O, k 1 (70 sts). Work 5 rows in garter st. Then work in stockinette st, increasing 18 sts on the 1st row only (88 sts), until piece measures 2 inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 8 sts remain. Bind off.

Collar. Starting at neck edge, with main color cast on 42 sts and work in stockinette st, keeping the 3 sts at both ends in garter st and increasing 1 st at both ends inside border every 3rd row 3 times (48 sts). Work straight until piece measures 1¼ inches. Then work 6 rows in garter st, decreasing 1 st at both ends of each row. Bind off remaining sts. Make another piece same as this.

Smocking. With a needleful of contrasting color, work 3 sts in satin st over each cross st of main color. Sew up side and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in, easing in the extra fullness across top. Sew collar to neck edge. Work a row of s c along both sides of opening, making 3 ch-4 buttonloops on right side. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonloops. Run ribbon through eyelets at waistline and tie at center front. Finish sleeves in same way.
