For size 2 use No. 4 needles; for size 3 use No. 5 needles and work as follows: Start diamonds, attaching colors as needed (use balls of colors M and A, and 2-yard strands of color B). 1st row: Knit 5 M, * k 1 B, 9 M. Repeat from * 6 times more, ending with k 1 B, 5 M. 2nd and all even rows: P back, using same colors as on previous row. 3rd row: * K 1 A, 3 M, 1 B, 1 M, 1 B, 3 M. Repeat from * 7 times more ending with k 2 A. 9th row: * K 1 A, 1 B, 2 A, 3 M, 2 A, 1 B. Repeat from * 7 times more ending with k 1 A. 11th row: * K 1 B, 4 A, 1 M, 4 A. Repeat from * 7 times more ending with k 1 B. 13th row: Same as 9th row. 15th row: Same as 7th row. 17th row: Same as 5th row. 19th row: Same as 3rd row. Repeat the 1st to 19th rows incl for pattern. Work straight until piece measures 8 inches in all.

To Shape Armholes: Keeping continuity of pattern, bind off 3 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows; then dec 1 st at the end of each row until 69 sts remain. Work straight in pattern until piece measures 4½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, and A diamonds are completed. Bind off for shoulder the first 15 sts. Bind off loosely for back of neck the next 39 sts. Bind off the remaining 15 sts.

BACK NECKBAND … With right side facing, using No. 2 needles and M, pick up 46 sts along back of neck. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 6 rows. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

FRONT … Cast on and work same as Back until piece measures 2 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape neck, work across 23 sts, bind off next 23 sts loosely and finish row. Turn and work over this last set of sts only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every other row, until 15 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 4½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping and A diamonds are completed. Bind off. Attach yarn at neck edge and work other side to correspond.

FRONT NECKBAND … With right side facing, using No. 2 needles and M, pick up 60 sts and work same as Back Neckband.

Repeat from * 5 times more ending with k 1 A. Work straight in pattern until sleeve measures 4½ inches and sts are on needle same as 1st row. Dec 1 st at both ends of next row and every 4th row thereafter, until there remain 41 sts. P back, decreasing 1 st. Sleeve now measures 9 inches, and pattern ends where two diagonals meet. Break off all but 1 ball of M. Change to No. 2 needles, and with M work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1½ inches. Bind off in ribbing.
