REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 2-ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted

NEEDLES: 1-pr. #4 single pointed

CUFF: Cast on 31 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches. Now start the pattern. ROW 1: * k 3 sts, p 1, repeat from * across row, ending with k 3. ROW 2: Purl across row. Repeat these 2 rows for the pattern. Make 4 rows then start the thumb increases.

THUMB INCREASES: 1st inc: Work over 14 sts, inc 1 st in next st, k 1, inc 1 st in next st, work 14 sts. Purl across next row. 2nd inc: Work 14 sts, inc 1 st in next st, k 3, inc 1 st in next st, work 14 sts. Purl across next row. 3rd inc: Work 14 sts, inc 1 st in next st, k 5, inc 1 st in next st, work 14 sts. Purl across next row. 4th inc: Work 14 sts, inc 1 st in next st, k 7, inc 1 st in next st, work 14 sts. Purl across next row. Thumb separation: Work over 15 sts, place these sts onto a st holder; knit 10 sts and leave on the needle; place the remaining sts onto a 2nd st holder. Cast on 1 st at end of the 10 sts; purl across these sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 10 rows. Next row: Knit 2 sts together across row. Break yarn, leaving 7 inches. Thread a darning needle and draw through the sts. Fasten tightly on wrong side of work. Sew up thumb.

HAND: Place the sts off first st holder onto a needle and tie yarn in; pick up and knit 2 sts on base of thumb; knit the sts off 2nd st holder (in pattern). Purl across next row. Keeping the pattern work until the mitten measures 3 inches above the ribbing.

TIP DECREASES: * k 3 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 2nd dec: * k 2 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 3rd dec: * k 1 st, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. 4th dec: Purl 2 sts together across row. Break yarn, leaving 10 inches. Finish as tip of thumb. MAKE THE OTHER MIITTEN THE SAME WAY.
