Baby Bib Pattern

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting & Crochet Cotton, 1 ball.
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size).
J. & P. Coats Bias Trim, 1 package.
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Six Strand, 1 skein the same color as Bias Trim, for embroidery.

Gauge: 9 sts make 1 inch; 12 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at bottom, cast on 57 sts. 1st row: * K 1, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 2nd row: K across. 3rd row: * P 1, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 1. 4th row: K across. Repeat these 4 rows until piece measures 6½ inches. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of next row and the following 8th row (53 sts). Then decrease 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row, 4 times (45 sts). On next row work in pattern across first 17 sts, bind off 11 sts (thus starting neck shaping), then continue across remaining 17 sts. Hereafter work over these last 17 sts, binding off 2 sts at neck edge every other row 3 times, at the same time decreasing 1 st at opposite edge every row, until all sts are worked off. Break off. Attach thread at opposite side of neck edge and work to correspond. Sew binding all around edges. Cut 2 pieces about 10 inches long and sew one at each side of neck edge for ties. Embroider bird design as in diagram, using 4 strands and working it in chain stitch.
