Knitted Afghan Pattern #690

Size 50 x 72 inches

MATERIAL:
9 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) mint green
4 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) dark green
3 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) beige
1 pair knitting needles each No. 6 and No. 8
1 aluminum crochet hook No. 6 or G

GAUGE:  5 sts. = 1 inch on #8 needles on pattern square, 5 sts. = 1 inch on #6 needles on garter stitch square

1st Strip (Make 4):
     With dark green and No. 8 needles cast on 39 sts. and work in pattern:
     1st row dark green: * K3, slip 1 st. as if to P (yarn in back of work), repeat from * across row, end K3.
     2nd row dark green: * K3, slip 1 st. as if to P (yarn in front of work), repeat from * across row, end K3.
     3rd row mint green: K1, * slip 1 st. as if to P (yarn in back of work), K3, repeat from * across row, end K1.
     4th row mint green: K1, * slip 1 st. as if to P (yarn in front of work), K3, repeat from * across row, end K1.
     5th and 6th row: beige as 1st and 2nd row.
     7th and 8th row: dark green as 3rd and 4th row.
     9th and 10th row: mint green as 1st and 2nd row.
     11th and 12th row: beige as 3rd and 4th row.
     Repeat these 12 rows for pattern until piece measures 7½ inch. ending with 2nd or 8th row. K2 rows dark green. Change to No. 6 needles and mint green and work in garter st. for 7½ inch. Continue to work alternately 7½ inch. in pattern and 7½ inch. in garter st. until strip has 5 pattern and 4 garter st. sections. Bind off.

2nd Strip (Make 3)
     Work the opposite as 1st strip starting with No. 6 needles and mint green cast on 39 sts. and work in garter st. for 7½ inch. Then change to No. 8 needles and pattern and work for 7½ inch. Continue to work alternately 7½ inch. in garter st. and 7½ inch. in pattern until strip has 5 garter st. and 4 pattern st. sections. Bind off.

FINISHING:
     With mint green crochet 1 row s.c. around each strip working 3 s.c. in each corner st. Alternating a 1st strip and a 2nd strip, sew up afghan on wrong side with an overhand stitch, taking up top thread of each st. on each edge only.

BORDER:
     With mint green work * 5 d.c. in 1 st., skip 2, 1 s.c. in next st., skip 2, repeat from * to corner, skip only 1 st. before and after corner shell st. Then continue to work pattern on rem. 3 sides as before, working all corners same as first one. With dark green work * 1 s.c. in center d.c. of previous row, 5 d.c. in s.c. of previous row, repeat from * all around. Fasten off and block to size.
