Cable Afghan Pattern #691

Size 45 x 66 inches

MATERIAL:
5 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) light yellow
6 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) gold
1 pair knitting needles No. 8

GAUGE: 5 sts. = 1 inch

CABLE STRIP: (Make 4)
     With gold and No. 8 needles cast on 30 sts. and work in pattern:
     1st row: K4, P2, K8, P2, K8, P2, K4
     2nd row: K4, K2, P8, K2, P8, K2, K4
     Repeat these 2 rows twice more.
     7th row: K4, * P2, slip next 2 sts. to an extra needle and hold in front of work, K next 2 sts., K2 sts., from extra needle, slip next 2 sts. to an extra needle and hold in back of work, K next 2 sts., K the 2 sts. from extra needle. * Repeat from * to * once. P2, K4
     8th row: as 2nd row.
     Continue to work this way and cable the K8 sts. every 8th row on right side until strip measures 66 inch. Bind off.

BLOCK PATTERN STRIP: (Make 5)
     With yellow and No. 8 needles cast on 24 sts. and work in pattern:
     1st row: K4, * K4, P4, repeat from * once, end K4
     2nd row: as 1st row
     3rd row: as 1st row
     4th row: as 1st row
     5th row: K4, * P4, K4, repeat from * once, end K4.
     6th row: as 5th row
     7th row: as 5th row
     8th row: as 5th row
     Repeat these 8 rows, keeping the 4 sts. on each end of needle in garter st. and rem. 16 sts. in block pattern until strip measures 66 inch. Bind off.

FINISHING:
     Alternating a block and a cable strip, sew up afghan on wrong side with an overhand stitch.

FRINGE:
     Wind yarn around a 6 inch cardboard and cut at one end. Tie a 4 strand fringe in every 3rd st. matching color along short sides of afghan. Block to size.
