REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 10-ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #3 single pointed. 1-pr. #5 single pointed.
CROCHET HOOK: 1 Bone #5.
GAUGE: 11 sts to 2 inches. 15 rows to 2 inches.
BACK: With the #3 needles cast on 64 (72) sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 2¼ inches. Now change to the #5 needles and work in stockinette stitch (k 1 row, p 1 row) until the piece measures 9 (9½) inches in all, or as long as you need up to the underarm. UNDERARM BIND OFFS: Bind off 4 (5) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, (once at each side). Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every knit row 3 (3) times. Now work even in stockinette stitch until the armhole measures 4¾ (5) inches above the underarm. SHOULDERS: Bind off 8 (9) sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows, (twice at each side). Bind off the remaining sts loosely for the back of the neck.
LEFT FRONT: With the #3 needles cast on 38 sts for both sizes. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2¼ inches. Now work in the following PATTERN:
ROW 1: * k 8, p 2, repeat from * across row, ending with k 8.
ROW 2: * P 8, k 2, repeat from * across row, ending with p 8.
ROW 3: P 1, * k 6, p 4, repeat from * across row, ending with k 6, p 1.
ROW 4: K 1, * p 6, k 4, repeat from * across row, ending with p 6, k 1.
ROW 5: P 2, * k 4, p 6, repeat from * across row, ending with k 4, p 2.
ROW 6: K 2, * p 4, k 6, repeat from * across row, ending with p 4, k 2.
ROW 7: P 3, * k 2, p 8, repeat from * across row, ending with K 2, p 3.
ROW 8: K 3, * p 2, k 8, repeat from * across row, ending with p 2, k 3.
ROW 9: K 3, * p 2, k 8, repeat from * across row, ending with p 2, k 3.
ROW 10: P 3, * k 2, p 8, repeat from * across row, ending with k 2, p 3.
ROW 11: K 2, * p 4, k 6, repeat from * across row, ending with p 4, k 2.
ROW 12: P 2, * k 4, p 6, repeat from * across row, ending with k 4, p 2.
ROW 13: K 1, * p 6, k 4, repeat from * across row, ending with p 6, k 1.
ROW 14: P 1, * k 6, p 4, repeat from * across row, ending with k 6, p 1.
ROW 15: * P 8, k 2, repeat from * across row, ending with p 8.
ROW 16: * k 8, p 2, repeat from * across row, ending with k 8.
Repeat these 16 rows for the pattern.
Work in the pattern until the piece measures 9 (9½) inches, or the same as the back up to the underarm. ARMHOLE SHAPING: With the right side of the work facing you bind off 4 (5) sts once. Keeping the sts in the pattern, decrease 1 stitch at the armhole edge (that is where you first bound off) every other row 4 (3) times. Work in the pattern until the armhole measures 3½ (4) inches above the underarm. NECK SHAPING: From the neck edge (opposite armhole bind off), bind off 9 (9) sts once. Decrease 1 stitch at the neck edge every row 5 (6) times. When the armhole measures 4¾ (5) inches above the underarm start the SHOULDER SHAPING: From the armhole edge bind off 8 (9) sts twice.
RIGHT FRONT: Work as the left front up to the underarm. Do the bind offs at the opposite sides, start the armhole with the wrong side of the work facing you.
LONG SLEEVES: With the #3 needles cast on 36 (40) sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2 inches. Now change to the #5 needles and work in stockinette stitch, increase 1 stitch at each side of the work every inch, until you have 50 (54) sts on the needle. Now work even until the sleeve measures 11 (12) inches, or as long as you need up to the underarm. SHAPING CAP OF SLEEVE: Bind off 4 (5) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, (once at each side). Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every knit row 9 (10) times. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every row 4 (4) times. Bind off the remaining sts.
FINISHING: Sew shoulder, underarm and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into armhole, matching the underarm seams and easing in any fullness towards the top. CROCHETING BORDER: With the right side of the work facing you, tie yarn at the bottom of the right front and work in s c along the front edge, (keeping the work flat) to neck edge; 3 s c in corner st, s c around neck, shaping to fit, 3 s c in corner st, s c down the left front. Chain 1 turn. 2nd row: 1 s c in each stitch, placing 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c around neck in each st, 3 s c in corner st. BUTTONHOLE ROW: * Chain 3 sts, skip 2 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 6 sts, repeat from * down the right front. Chain 1, turn. 3rd row: 1 s c in each stitch, placing 2 s c over the chain 3 space. Complete the row. Break yarn.
EMBROIDERY: With the contrasting color, over the knit 2 sts at the beginning of the pattern, over cast twice. EXPLANATION: * Bring needle to the left of the knit 2 sts; bring down at the right side of k 2 sts, repeat once more, tie knot at the back. * Repeat between stars at each pattern.
