REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 4 ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted. 3 – ½ ounce balls of Angora.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #3 single pointed. 1-pr. #5 single pointed.
CROCHET HOOK: 1 Bone #5.

NOTE: If sweater is made with all yarn, add 2 ounces more to above requirement.

GAUGE: 5½ sts to an inch.

BACK: Using the #3 needles cast on 58 (62) sts, work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1¼ (1¼) inches. Now change to the #5 needles and work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 7½ (8) inches in all, or as long as you want up to the underarm. UNDERARM SHAPING: Bind off 3 (3) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, (once at each side.) Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row 3 times. Then work even until the armhole measures 4½ (5) inches above the underarm. SHOULDER SHAPING: Bind off 4 (4) sts at the beginning of the next 6 (6) rows. Bind off the remaining sts for the back of the neck.

RIGHT FRONT: Using the #3 needles cast on 30 (32) sts, and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1¼ (1¼) inches. Now change to the #5 needles and start the pattern: ROW 1: K 10 (12) sts; p 2, k 4, p 2, k 12, (12) sts. ROW 2: P 12 (12) sts; k 2, p 4, k 2, p 10, (12) sts. ROW 3: K 10 (12) sts; p 2, slip the next 2 sts onto a dble pt needle and hold in back of work, knit the next 2 sts, knit the 2 sts off the dble pt needle; p 2, k 12 (12) sts. ROW 4: Repeat row 2. Repeat these 4 rows for the pattern. Work until the piece measures the same as the back up to the underarm, ending with the left side of the work facing you. UNDERARM SHAPING: At the beginning of the purl row, bind off 3 (4) sts, once. Finish row. Keeping the sts in pattern, decrease 1 stitch at the underarm edge every other row 3 (3) times. Then work until the piece measures 3½ (3¾) inches above the underarm. NECK SHAPING: At the neck edge bind off 5 (7) sts once; decrease 1 stitch at the neck edge every row 5 (6) times. When the armhole measures the same as the back, from the armhole edge bind off 4 sts 3 times. Break yarn.

LEFT FRONT: Work to correspond to the right front.

SLEEVES: (For both sizes). Using the #3 needles cast on 40 sts, and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for an inch. Now change to the #5 needles and work in stockinette INCREASING 8 STS ON THE FIRST KNIT ROW. Work in stockinette stitch even, until the sleeve measures 2½ inches in all, or as long as you want. UNDERARM BIND OFF: Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, (once at each side). Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every 4th row 3 times. Now work even until the sleeve measures 3¼ inches above the underarm bind off. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every row 4 times. Bind off the remaining sts.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder, side seams. Sew sleeve seams, and sew sleeves into armhole matching underarm seams and easing in fullness towards the top.

CROCHETING BAND: Tie yarn at the beginning of right front, using the #5 bone hook, single crochet keeping the work flat, up the right front to neck edge; 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c around the neck, shaping to fit if necessary, 3 s c in left front st, s c down left front. 2nd row: Chain 1, turn, s c in each st around. 3rd row: Buttonhole row: Chain 1, turn, 2 s c, * chain 3, skip 2 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 8 sts, repeat from * up to neck edge, finish row with 1 s c in each st. Ch. 1, turn. 4th row: 1 s c in each st, placing 2 s c over chain 3 on row below. Break yarn. Sew buttons into place.
